About me:

Ah me! I've now studied thoroughly and with ardent effort philosophy, law, medicine, and even, alas! theology. And here I stand, poor fool, and am no wiser than before. I've the title of Master, even Doctor, and for ten years now I've been leading my pupils by the nose, up and down and back and forth - and realize that we can't know anything! And that is eating my heart out. True, I'm smarter than all these fops of Doctors, Masters, clerks, and preachers; nor am I tormented by scruple or doubt, or any fear of hell or devil. In return, I'm deprived of all joy. For I don't pretend to know anything worth knowing, or to be able to teach anything that might improve men or convert them. Then too, I've neither gods nor gold, nor is any worldly honor or glory mine. No dog would lead such a life as this! And so I've devoted myself to magic, hoping that through the power and the speech of the spirit many a secret might become known to me; so that no longer, in bitter sweat, I'll need to say things that I don't know to be true; and so that I may discern what holds the universe together in its deepest center, view all the working and germinal forces, and be done with this traffic in words.
