I went to my first party in 95 i think. Transcendance 2, thrown by my good friends Ruffian and John Dwight. I had been listening to techno for a couple years before that but it was nothing like what I heard that night. I decided right then that I would get behind the decks and learn the art of "crowd control".
I started in Pittsburgh where at the time the local heroes; Ruffian, Smoov, & Dieselboy showed me how to match beats, and the basics of phasing. I didn't have any of my own records so i played theirs...everything from techno to breaks to drum n bass. I found that i had more fun playing with techno and trance and started buying records whenever i had money in my pocket. I got into what was then known as epic trance and began playing at college house parties and after parties. The first time I played out was at club 164 in downtown Pittsburgh. I remember being so nervous I thought I was going to piss my pants, but once I got through the 1st mix and didnt train-wreck I was loving it.
I made my first mix tape in 96 called C=64. I started getting asked to play clubs and parties in Pittsburgh on a regular basis. I had a residency after a couple years and moved into what I always called hard trance. Who the hell knows what people are calling it today but thats a different subject altogether.
Now 10+ years later, after playing countless clubs, parties, and wherever else, in front of people or by myself, I still feel like I'm going to piss myself until I get through that 1st mix.
