Who I'd like to meet:
breakthrough” pioneer, Dj Creme has taken the musical genre of reggaetón and urban mixing to levels and places never gone before. The youngest program director for Massachusetts’s Power 1270 a.m., Dj Creme’s meteoric rise to the top took him, at nineteen, to a coveted post hosting a noontime mix show while becoming part of one of the first reggaetón shows in the U.S.: Planet Reggae. The “go to” guy on air exposing, playing and explaining the reggaetón music from Puerto Rico to East Coast audiences, DJ Creme’s voice and style was the “primer” on reggaetón for Latinos in the Philly and Massachusetts area… until he hit New York just one year later.
“Back in the day when I began going on air I would have to explain the music while going back in time to prop up the original interpreters of this genre,” recalls DJ Creme.
DJ Creme’s “El Reggaetón De N.Y.” became The Big Apple’s first show of the fused Island genres, just as quickly becoming the #1 program in the urban youth market over Latino Mix’s 105.9 FM. But you know even that wasn’t enough for the restless young talent, DJ Creme went on to become one of the founders of a nationally syndicated reggaetón show El Rhumbon over Sirius Radio before founding the first International Reggaetón DJ Crew, “The Commissioners” composed of some of the top club, mobile and radio Latin urban DJ’s from different parts of the country including Puerto Rico, Australia, Switzerland and Mexico.
By 2006, DJ Creme landed the enviable position of co-producer, co musical director and co-host of the nationally syndicated Daddy Yankee radio show “On Fuego” over ABC Radio. This was followed by an industry magazine’s induction into the Top One Hundred DJ’s where he’s been listed for two consecutive years.
Pioneer Electronics tapped DJ Creme’s talents making him the first Latin Urban DJ sponsored by the biggest DJ equipment manufacturer in the world. Pioneer has him traveling around the country demonstrating the products and teaching DJs and consumers how to operate the Pioneer Pro DJ.
The first American DJ to break reggaetón in Ibiza, Spain and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, DJ Creme has moved parallel to growth of the Latin Urban movement, playing the hottest clubs throughout the U.S. Canada, Puerto Rico and South America.
For more than ten years Creme has spun Latin Urban Music co-producing remixes for celebs such as Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Tego Calderon, Alexis y Fido, Cypress Hill, Oro Solido, El Gran Combo and Ricky Martin to mention a few. He’s also traveled the world working events in Malaysia, Dominican Republic and Colombia as well as “A” list affairs such as Whitney Houston’s after parties. Of late, DJ Creme is producing his own remixes, party records and original tracks played by DJ’s and radio stations all over the world.
Recently, Creme was an On Air Personality and Mixer for the #1 Latino Radio Station in the country La Mega 97.9 FM in New York, hosting and producing a weekly two hour radio show “La Crema Mezcla” playing the best in Latin Urban Music. Here he mixed an eclectic blend of urban genres including pop, reggaetón, salsa, bachata, house and urban music providing listeners with a unique approach including exclusive remixes, remixed blends and match-ups to the program along with new and recurrent hits.
Today, DJ Creme has launched his own nationally syndicated “The DJ Creme Show” showcasing his talent as an On Air personality, Producer and DJ. The show features the best in Latin Urban music plus the top five countdown of the week along with news and gossip keeping his peeps informed and on their feet.
For two consecutive years DJ Creme has been listed as one of the Top One Hundred DJ’s in DJ Times magazine. Now he’s been busy founding and laying the groundwork in developing the Northeast’s first bilingual DJ school.
Born in Ciales, Puerto Rico on June 26, 1981, DJ Creme moved to Hartford Connecticut when he was five years old later migrating to Massachusetts where he was raised for the next sixteen years. “I was always the kid in the DJ booth,” he recalls with nostalgia. “The first guy to teach me was this gringo whom I bothered so much he finally gave in and began teaching me when I was 16.”
Creme’s early musical influences however were salsa and hip-hop. His grandfather was a musical artisan crafting the traditional Puerto Rican ten stringed cuatro guitars as well as timbales and congas in their home. He got his first DJ residency at 17 eventually running the radio station that gave him the opportunity.
Creme is now producing re-mixes and party records while focusing on original material, one of the reasons he started studying piano. From salsa to Latino Urban and top 40, DJ Creme says his taste is truly indefinable as this is all the music he himself likes.
The Redbull energy drink tapped DJ Crème as one of the judges for the finals in the competition "La Batalla De Los Gallos" in Bogota, Colombia on Nov.3-6, 2006. This event brought Latino MCs together putting them to the test as they freestyle and battle each other for the post of Best Latin Hip Hop MC. Dj Creme was a judge for the preliminary rounds in NYC where the winner represents the US in Bogotá, Colombia for the finals.
Aside from the original productions, DJ Creme is busy working on the school he has christened, “In the Mix” headquartered in New Jersey. Founded as an after school program for kids in Bellville, New Jersey, it is the only DJ school offering classes in both English and Spanish. The facilities have a recording and photo studio as well as a one-stop shop for DJ’s to design flyers, posters and other promotional materials such as T-Shirts. He has also started a “Commissioners mp3 Pool,” continuing the Commissioners series he started three years ago.
