Health, wealth, peace and blessings. I am the former Los Angeles radio mix show dj at AM-Stereo 1580 KDAY and FM 102.3 KJLH. With more than 16 years of experience living and working in the Tokyo metropolitan areas in the entertainment and music business fields as an event coordinater, dj, mc, record / artists promoter, lecturer, consultant, etc. My services are available for the territory of Japan. I am willing to relocate for business.
Born 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware then relocated to Princess Anne, Maryland and raised in nearby Westover on the eastern shore. Graduated in 1978 from Washington High School ( Jaguars ) where sometime around '76-'77 formed the mobile dj duo called "The Dynamics" with high school classmate Anthony Echols (Doane). Together we did highly popular and successful Friday night after-school dances and parties for various WHS orginizations. I have to credit local mobile deejay Sam Doane as one of my early emcee influences along with local niteclub deejay "Fly" and on-air radio personality Chris Barry from WJDY. Chris gave me my first opportunities to hang around a radio station and go on live remote broadcasts.
Spent my high school summer vacations on the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (Hawks) campus in the Upward Bound Program which helped me expand mentally, socially and musically during my teen years and introduced me early on to college life, fraternities & sororities AND "homecoming" week!
After graduating high school Anthony split town and I hooked up with mobile dj Ellis Crump's " Disco Funk Incorporated " (Disco Funk,Inc.) out of Salisbury, Maryland. Ellis was heavy into the electronics side of sound amps, high quality speaker systems and lighting. So he turned me loose on the turntables to create the DFI sound, groove and vibe. My cousin David Collins (R.I.P.) came on as emcee. We also included stage-dance-lights-fireworks performances and fog machines into our shows along with a variety of special effects. Other members of DFI included James "Swann" Robert from B-more, Ray Lockamy from N.C., Mark Hill from D.C., Bryant Coleman, Cropper (R.I.P.), Tony Crump, among others. Our distinct personalities jelled to make our parties one hell of an experience. We also coordinated and promoted "battles" with other mobile deejay's like "The Controller"(Greg Stephen's crew from Norfolk VA) , "Grand Master Funk"(Chuck Franklin's crew from Berlin MD) , "NYCS" aka "New York City Style"(Mike Bryan's crew from Cambridge MD featuring "Tut"), among others. All the groups got along with each other because we all loved music, good sound, entertaining the crowd and PARTYING!
My very good buddy Thomas Stevenson gave me the opportunity to move to Los Angeles and my cousin Golden Teagle steadfastly encouraged me to head west with him.
Got to L.A. and hooked up with William "Bill" Jones from Irvington,NJ. We presented a series of demo mixtapes to Jim Maddox who was GM of KJLH (which is owned by Stevie Wonder) with the idea ("idea" introduced to station GM and PD thanks to Wendall Bates and Chris Jonz) of creating a mastermix show. Eventually did the "KJLH Saturday Night Hot Mix Show" along with dj/artist/producer Greg Royal (aka Gregski aka Mixmaster Gee) before moving on to 24 hour all rap station 1580 KDAY (thanks to Steve Washington and Jack Patterson) until 1991. Thanks to Eddie from JDC Records and Marr Takeuchi I was able to tour Japan as a deejay and finally settle in Tokyo.
My endeavours in Los Angeles included work as a chart reporter for Billboard Magazine, music buyer for Wherehouse Records (La Brea and Rodeo Blvd), Record Industries (stores on Crenshaw, Manchester and El Segundo Blvds), director of Impact Record Pool (near King and Crenshaw Blvds), Tower Records (Sunset) and also as a deejay/remixer/consultant/promoter/writer and video host among other entertainment related ventures .
My work in Japan has included stints as a tv-radio-tour dj/emcee/event planner-coordinator, international special projects manager (Interlink Music Japan and Handcuts Records Japan).
Also created, coordinated and recorded cd's with Soren Petersen aka DJ Cash as "The Funky Boyz" (released in Japan only thru Teichiku Records).
