"Spinjunkies - Jay Z is Dead"
"DJ Deep See - Phish Remixes Volume 1"
"Despite a shared fondness for illegal activities, mash-uppers, the great outlaw folk-artists of the early 21st century, have mostly ignored jambands. Hippies and hip-hop have rarely mixed, but a pair of albums currently circulating on the internet aims to change that. Spinjunkies "Jay-Z is Dead" -- first released into the wild in 2004 -- is the most surprising Grateful Dead collection in years. A capella 'Black Album' tracks make heady blunt-fellows with the Dead's bouncingest grooves. "Fire on the Mountain" transforms the infections "Dirt off Your Shoulder" into a summertime stomp, while "Threat" refracts Garcia's pedal-steel from "Black Peter" into a twisted, beautiful beat that rivals the Clouddead's collective most illbient. Some experiments fail, but charm holds the project together.
DJ Deep See's more recent "Phish Remixes Vol. 1" are less conceptual than the Spinjunkies. Easily the dopest is "Split Encore & Mike", which splices the weird rhythms of "Split Open & Melt" into an ominous bed for Jay-Z's "Encore", and is cut with samples of Phish bassist Mike Gordon speaking on the radio before Phish's final performances in 2004. "Without PT" employs some maybe-too-linear samples (a recurring problem) from "Sand", but Eminem still sounds badass (though in that company, who wouldn't?). Wanna hear 'em? Try Google."
