Sounds Like
Layered textures fusing hip-hop, dub, and drum&bass rhythms with an orchestral and cross-cultural sound pallete. These pieces interweave samples from original compositions (for classical instrumentation) with found objects from any point in recorded audio history, seeking out resonant relationships between diverse sources. Taking inspiration from many areas of musical experience which have been kept segregated by our conditioning, this music aims to participate in the work of breaking down the walls that keep people from listening to each other.
A renegade Doctor of Music from Harvard University, DJ Dubble8 (a.k.a. Erik Spangler) is a composer and turntablist whose hybrid soundscapes thrive on a unique blend of experimental and popular influences. Samples from old vinyl records, programmed drum patterns, newly composed acoustic layers, and synthetic sound elements are all subject to live time-bending through digital turntable manipulation. Dubble8’s acoustic compositions have been performed across the United States and Canada, by ensembles including the Atlantic Brass Quintet, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, International Contemporary Ensemble, Callithumpian Consort, and the yesaroun’ duo. He has performed his own music in solo DJ sets across the United States, at venues ranging from clubs and galleries to university concert halls.
Recent production projects include soundtracks for several short films by Joe Zohar (Moving Box Studios, Ithaca, NY)-- "Chalk Outlines" (2006) and "Repentance" (2005); a collection of tracks for experimental/trip-hop singer Du Yun, leading to an album to be released by Tag Team Records; "OY" featured on rising underground hip-hop artist S.K.I.P.'s album "What They Never Told You" (2006); a composition for bassoon and electronics, "a firefly in the belly" (2006), commissioned by Dana Jessen (New England Conservatory of Music); solo albums "Tompkins County Organic: homegrown beats, vol. I" (2005) and "Fourth World Nyabinghi"(2006).
A committed teacher, Dubble8 has served on the faculty of institutions ranging from Ithaca College to Oasis Middle School (Cape Coral, FL). He currently teaches music at Maryland Academy of Technology and Health Sciences (charter high school in Baltimore, MD).

Erik, thanks for your kind words, don't let the style fool you, I'm all about bringing differrent styles of music together (check out BE HEARD) its on my friends list. its a local open mic i host, ALL original art, ALL genres, when people start pushing they're boundries and working together out of admiration for one another it's amazing what happens.
Music's all about communication, that's why i started this. We're 3 months in and it's exploding. People are really listening to one another and i finally feel like we're creating a community of artists.
We're in the process of changing venue's so join our list and stay tuned. We all hope to meet you soon.
Thanks a lot for your kind comment about "o jardim das estrelas", I really appreciate that.
That'd be fantastic to make a collaboration one of these days, one way or another.
I'll have a lot of things to do during the summer but that'd be cool to talk about we could do together next autumn when things cool off a little bit !
I really love all your tracks, be they signed under your real name or as DJ Dubble8.
You should check one of my best friends' music : Mani Angelo; he shares the same influences than you (from classical to hip-hop): I know you're gonna dig this !
Also check Hiawatha and DJ Mars : they're 2 crazy American guys who make a very beautiful lo-fi music.
Well, I hope we'll stay in touch and have the possibility to do something together one day...
