Bio:
Freelance urban music opinionista, deejay and all around saucygirl, Erica Olsen aka dj eko can be found sleuthing records, plotting her escape out of the country on her next adventure, evangelizing and writing for Urb & SurfGirl magazine, debating pop culture and wondering when the next time she’ll get to see fireflies or Geisha might be. Her current grooving grounds are rooted in Santa Cruz and the greater bay area. She rocks a weekly radio show, “HipHopEthics101” every Saturday at 10:30pm on KZSC fm with a world-wide webcast that can be found at www.kzsc.org and posts up superstar interviews on www.thegiantpeach.com.
Hip-hop and soul music has been her way of life since LLCool J, Michael Jackson, Run DMC, Prince, LA Dream Team, Kurtis Blow, Kwame and Egyptian Prince hit her earhole in elementary school. She’s been able to travel the US and Japan on a hip hop passport of sorts (Sprite Liquid Mix Tour 2003 with NERD, The Roots & Talib Kweli) and flys to dj whenever, wherever.
Having worked for Quannum, Universal Music, Stones Throw, Atlantic Records, Virgin Records, Project Blowed, Scion, Jurassic 5, Gavin, KCSB, thegiantpeach.com and Yahoo! Eko gets recognized as a source of knowledge and understanding of music and politics, shares panel microphones with Toure, Angela Davis, Jean Grae, Talib Kweli, Sarah Jones and Nelson George. She takes that knowledge and passion and transmits it through the turntables and mixer whenever the opportunity arises.
Outside of the radio waves, Eko has laid down sounds from Hollywood to SF to Atlanta at events as diverse as Youth Speaks National Poetry Finals, Talib Kweli concerts, Spoken Word events and club dancefloors, occasionally sharing tables with superstar selectors like ?uestlove, JBoogie, Sake-1 and Dj Language. Her current sets stretch a huge spectrum of soul, funk and hip hop featuring artists like: Chaka Khan, SA-RA, Outkast, Slave, Amerie, MIA, Slum Village & Jill Scott. She feels lucky enough be tapped into the supportive and intimate niche communities around the country where she finds listeners, peers and dancefloors who are open to good artists outside the mainstream. Finally, after 10 years of radio has completed her first multi-genre mixtape, “She Wants to Move” available in stores and online.
