“Today you are seven years old now you are a man. Bury your first toy and your mothers picture,” these are the famous first lines of the 1971 Alejandro Jodorowsky film, EL TOPO. These words ring true to Mike Perry the up and coming spin artist who takes his name from the film. El Topo is a fusion of the Baltimore club sound of Diplo, the sampling of Them Jeans, and the energy of Devlin and Darko (Spank Rock). El Topo’s style is a direct metamorphosis of his childhood, growing up in Sacramento, California he had to grow up quickly. In order to get what he wanted El Topo had to hustle to buy turntables. Brought up on Gangsta Rap and Krautrock no one’s set can compare to the diverse and intricate flavor of El Topo. His first Mix-tape “I’m Hustla Baby, Vol. 001,” is dedicated to his past. Like the picture and the toy, the past is buried but never forgotten.
