Brisbane DJ Fergus Alexander has forged his reputation over a nearly decade-long DJ career by pushing the cutting-edge of house music sounds well before many of his contemporaries have got with the times. With his music steeped in solid grooves, low slung beats, rich basslines , intricate percussion and intelligent melodies, Fergus has become to be known as one of the main specialists in his home town of all things deep for the dance floor.
Finding great music is something of a deep passion for Fergus. He does this the old-fashioned way – not by searching internet forums and superstar DJ setlists for the hottest tracks of the day, but through religiously trawling through new music in search of something and someone fresh, something which sparks the kind of enthusiasm which saw his love of electronic music finally lure him behind the turntables in 2000. And this still isn’t enough, with many tracks getting the Fergus re-edit treatment to ensure his sets flow as seamlessly as possible.
Although Fergus has been a fixture on the Brisbane scene since those first tentative steps behind the decks, playing everything from small independent club nights to multi-room parties, big festivals to bush doofs, his star has really begun to rise through the Brisbane underground in 2007. Of special note was Fergus’ warm-up set for Lee Burridge at his Balance012 launch at The Sunday Roast, rightly regarded by many who saw it as the stand-out local set of 2007. “The man knows how to build a floor...” gushed In The Mix reviewer Palaeo-Tech of a “brilliantly programmed set and definitely one of the best seen from Fergus Alexander.”
Fergus has been heavily involved in the Brisbane scene as a promoter, initially through bringing together a number of independent crews under the United Sound System banner in 2002. This union hosted Phil K’s Balance launch and was also responsible for bringing the then fledgling In The Mix website into the public eye of Brisbane by hosting its first Member’s Parties. As part of the Logic Events crew since 2005 (alongside fellow DJs Mike Redfern and BPM) he’s brought such diverse acts as James Holden, Desyn Masiello, Paolo Mojo, Luke Fair, Martinez, Steve Porter, Gui Boratto, SOS, Joris Voorn, Phonique, Deep Child, Tigerskin, Dirt Crew and Meat Katie through Brisbane, more often than not before his home city’s larger club operators have realised what they’re missing out on.
But no matter what setting you catch Fergus in, whether it is his own parties or someone else's, you know you’re going to hear a unique set which sits a little to the left of what DJs X, Y and Z are playing – and you also know he’ll be so lost in the groove he’ll be moving to the music as much as the packed dancefloor before him.
“Go on!” is a pure funk explosion, with an irresistible instrumental bassline and hip hop bumps that irrefutably sketches Enzo’s style, but the real mind-climax comes with “Triplet Work”deep bassline & synths, cosmic arps and a really “charmante” melody, so disco, so cosmic, so defintely Ponzio’s style!
