During the past 15 years, DJ Floro has been working as DJ at several clubs and discos of Madrid (Sala Universal, Aqualung, La Habana, Suristan, La Boca Del Lobo, El Juglar, Tempo, El Junco, Jazz Club, Anymus), London (Notting Hill Arts Club and Cargo), Granada (Afrodisia and Planta Baja), Barcelona (La Paloma and City Hall-Homeless) and other cities... Republicafrobeat Vol. 1

El origen de REPUBLICAFROBEAT se remonta a agosto del 2002 cuando un pequeño e improvisado colectivo de seguidores y amantes del Afrobeat y, sobre todo de su mentor, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, organizan un homenaje de tres días coincidiendo con el quinto aniversario de su muerte y denominándolo simplemente "5 Años sin Fela".

Exposiciones, proyecciones y Djs hacen una pequeña gira por locales de Madrid y participan en la 3ª Edición del Festival Periferias de Huesca, donde también se le rendía tributo. La mecha estaba encendida y Floren Cuadrado aka Dj Floro, Javi Zarco aka Pincha Extra Z y Sagrario Luna aka Luna decidimos prender más fuego, es decir, montar una Asociación Cultural AfrobeatProject a través de la cual podamos explorar territorios alrededor del Afrobeat y aportar nuestro granito de arena. El segundo fruto que nos crece entre las manos es un disco financiado de manera autogestionada. Una compilación realizada por DJ Floro, conocido por sus Radical y Digital Mestizo, su "Electros y Latinos" o sus compilaciones sobre Boogaloo-Latin-Soul-Jazz...etc. Un especialista , vaya, con un groove incombustible y si apuramos, inigualable.

El fruto es bautizado como REPUBLICAFROBEAT haciendo un guiño a Fela y su Kalakuta Republic, pero recogiendo la lectura que del Afrobeat se hace en la actualidad desde prismas dispares y variopintos. Tan dispares como reflejan Tony Allen y Femi Kuti, militantes descubriendo senderos desde dentro del propio estilo o, Ashley Beedle (Black Jazz Chronicles) , Adam Golstone (Cultural Mambo) y Masters at Work, trío de ases que acercan el Afrobeat al House o viceversa.

Tan variopintos como el rockero nigeriano, Keziah Jones, quien revisita a Fela desde el espíritu hendrixiano, o el trío italiano Kwanzaa Posse, maestros de los botones, o el personalísimo toque Acid-jazzy del británico Snowboy, o el dúo norteamericano Blaze que logran que el House baile Soul y Hip Hop ( o es al contrario?). Finalmente el surtido cromático lo apuntalan Fatboy Slim, el alquimista de las remezclas, Zuco 103 con su inconfundible voz y sabor brasilerios y Javi P3z, que lo acaba sazonando sorprendentemente desde su alterego Digi Onze.

REPUBLICAFROBEAT es un disco contemporáneo que revisa y recoge la filosofía de Fela Kuti y se alza contra el imperialismo/colonialismo que domina de forma alarmante.

The origin of REPUBLICAFROBEAT can be established in August 2002. At that date, a small and improvised group of fans of Afrobeat and, in particular, of its mentor, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, organised a three day homage coinciding with the fifth Anniversary of his death. The just called it “Five Years without Fela”. Exhibitions, Projects and Djs made a small tour of locales in Madrid and took part in the third edition of the Festival Periferias de Huesca, where a homage was also paid. The fire was ignited and Floren Cuadrado, Dj Floro, Javi Zarco, Pincha Extra Z and Sagrario Luna decided to fuel it. In other words, organise an AfrobeatProject Cultural Asociation through which we were able to explore new territories around Afrobeat and make our small contribution. The second fruit of our contribution is a self-financed record, a compilation made by DJ Floro, known by his Radical and Digital Mestizo, his  Electros and Latinos or his compilations of Boogaloo-Latin-Soul-Jazz...etc. He is really a specialist with an inexhaustible and unequalled groove.
The fruit is named REPUBLICAFROBEAT taking our hat off to Fela and his Kalakuta Republic, but picking up on the interpretation of Afrobeat that is currently being done, through varied and different prisms. They are as different as Tony Allen and Femi Kuti, Ashley Beedle (Black Jazz Chronicles), Adam Golstone (Cultural Mambo) and Masters at Work, trio of aces that draw closer to House or vice versa.

They are as varied as the Nigerian rocker  Keziah Jones, who revisits Fela in a Hendrix-like way, or the Italian trio Kwanzaa (key-board masters) or the extremely personal Acid-Jazzy touch of the British Snowboy, or the North-American duo Blaze who manage to make House to dance Soul and Hip-Hop, (or is it the other way around?). Finally, the chromatic assortment is reinforced by the mix-master Fatboy Slim, Zuco 103 (with its unmistakeable voice) and Brazilian flavour and Javi P3z, which he surprisingly ends seasoning up by his alterego Digi Onze.

With only one reference in his catalog "Bizeti" by Afrika Lisanga, Suristán Records has his Dr Jekill in Sala Suristán. Eight years embracing multicultural proposals and favouring a way of coexistence and brotherhood between them, between us.
REPUBLICAFROBEAT is a contemporary record that picks up on the Fela Kuti philosophy and stands up against the imperialism that dominates in an alarming way.
REPUBLICAFROBEAT wants you to dance and think.

After Fela Kuti’s death in 1997, afrobeat music has experienced a worldwide flowering. Each day, more and more musicians and djs vindicate afrobeat as a music plenty of future and with a musical, creative and political expression. New compilations, covering from original afrofunk to current electronic focused afrobeat, are backed by plenty of specialized labels, such as Lenar, Comet, Strut, Afrodisiac, Soundway, Honest Jons, Stern’s, Evolver….
 
Afrobeat is used by the best of house scene: Joe Claussel, Ron Trent, Kerri Chandler, Blaze, Martin Solvieg, Ashley Beedle…. Afrobeat serves both as inspiration source for people from hip-hop scene (Blackalicious, Chief Xcel, Missy Elliot, Common, Nas, Mos Def, Ty, Weird Mc…) and as basis for many Djs: Rich Medina, Bobbito, Max Reinhardt, Rita Ray, Nikki Lucas, Dj Haul, Javi P3z….
 
In the meantime, afrobeat scene is shook by a big bang of new bands with a more orthodox point of view, such as T’Boys (France),  Belgian Afro Beat Association, (Belgium), Afrodizz (Canada), Antibalas, Akoya, Kokolo, Afrobeat Down, Bama & The Family, Ocote Soul Sounds, Nomo, Chicago Afrobeat Project (USA), Dele Sosimi, Snowboy, Ju Ju Juice Afrobeat Band (UK), part of colombian champeta criolla movement as Batata y su Rumba Palanquera, and, of course, in Nigeria, the afrobeat birthplace, where orthodoxy and heterodoxy coexist in artists like Femi Kuti, Lágbájá, Ayetoro, Alariyo of Africa, Tony Allen….
 
Afrobeat has served as an approach path to african music.
 
 REPUBLICAFROBEAT VOL. 2 is just a little, electronic exponent of current panorama. We have selected musicians as Will Holland (aka Quantic) that both solo as well as The Quantic Soul Orchestra use afrobeat as an expression form. Or David Byrne, Talking Heads leader and one of the first afrobeat apologists, and Louie Vega, used to remix, play and create afrobeat (solo or as MAW), supporting to Thievery Corporation in an amazing afrobeat. Dj, producer, musician and remixer Nickodemus had always included afrobeat in his “Turntables On The Hudson” compilations. We have found succulent rarities such as Al Green remixed in afrobeat clef in 1989;  Karl Denson, with a wide experience in the style; nigerian saxophonist Bukky Leo, former member of Fela and Tony Allen bands, develops afrobeat through house and jazz;  Bantu, nigerian but settled in Germany, interprets afrobeat in hip-hop clef, giving sense at the kaleidoscopic sense of disk; multiinstrumentalist Franck Biyong, representative of the new african sound: Afroelectric; Ben Lamdin, also multiinstrumentalist,  founder of Nostalgia 77 and a lover of ’60 soul and jazz electronically remixed; Dissent, pseudonym of Wide Hive Records founder Gregory Howe, an enthusiast of world music’s electronic basis and structure. Finally, Raw Deal emphasizes dj’s importance on afrobeat. And being this a record where electronics reign, a roots stroke of the brush couldn..t be missing, we took the liberty because we feel necessary to offer  a view of Afrobeat done in Spain, with the “Afromeño” groove by Gecko Turner and the african rhythms explorers, Couscous Party.
 
 REPUBLICAFROBEAT VOL. 2 is the new proposal of Asociación Cultural AfrobeatProject in collaboration with Lovemonk. It’s also a recognition to musicians as David Byrne, for his capability of take risks and to be a pioneer in appreciation and spread of afrobeat; young but prolific Will Holand (aka Quantic) because he goes on developing and growing it; dj’s, with their duality of musician and remixer, because they spread afrobeat every night; and for those approaching afrobeat from electronics or from roots.

Desde la muerte de Fela Kuti en 1997, el afrobeat vive un florecimiento mundial. Cada día más músicos y dj’s reivindican el afrobeat como una música cargada de futuro y de expresión musical, creativa y política. Se editan recopilaciones que abarcan los orígenes, el afrofunk o el afrobeat facturado en la actualidad bajo un prisma electrónico, propiciado por la proliferación de sellos especializados como Lenar, Comet, Strut, Afrodisiac, Soundway, Honest Jons, Stern’s, Evolver….

Es un género utilizado por los mejores del house, Joe Claussel, Kerri Chandler, Blaze, Martin Solvieg, Ashley Beedle…. Sirve de inspiración a gente del Hip Hop como Blackalicious, Chief Xcel, Missy Elliot, Common, Nas, Mos Def, Ty, Weird Mc…, y es la estrella para algunos Dj..s como Rich Medina, Bobbito, Max Reinhardt, Rita Ray, Nikki Lucas, Dj Haul, Javi P3z…

Afrobeat Band (UK), parte del movimiento de la champeta criolla colombiana representada por Batata y su Rumba Palanquera, y por supuesto en Nigeria, la cuna del afrobeat, donde la ortodoxia y la heterodoxia conviven en artistas como Femi Kuti, Lágbájá, Ayetoro, Alariyo Of África, Tony Allen…

El afrobeat ha servido de cauce para que muchos se acerquen a la música africana.
Republicafrobeat Vol.2 es solo un pequeño botón de muestra electrónico de lo que está ocurriendo en la actualidad. Seleccionamos a músicos como Will Holland, aka Quantic, que en solitario o como The Quantic Soul Orchestra utiliza el afrobeat como forma de expresión; o David Byrne que al frente de Talking Heads fue uno de los pioneros en reivindicarlo y Louie Vega, acostumbrado a remezclar, pinchar y crear afrobeat en solitario y con MAW, acompañan en este caso a Thievery Corporation en un sorprendente afrobeat.

Nickodemus como Dj, productor, músico y remezclador siempre ha incluido afrobeat en sus recopilaciones “Turntables On The Hudson”. Hallamos suculentas rarezas como el gran Al Green remezclado en clave afrobeat en 1989; Karl Denson a quien el estilo no le es ajeno; al saxofonista nigeriano Bukky Leo que tras pasar por las filas de Fela y Tony Allen, ha desarrollado el afrobeat a través del house y el jazz; a Bantu, otro nigeriano afincado en Alemania que lo interpreta en clave Hip Hop confirmando el sentido caleidoscópico del disco; al multiinstrumentista Franck Biyong , uno de los representantes del nuevo sonido africano, el Afroelectric; a Ben Lamdin, otro multiinstrumentista, creador de Nostalgia 77 y enamorado del soul y el jazz de los 60 pasados por el ordenador; a Dissent, seudónimo del fundador de Wide Hive Records, Gregory Howe, amante de las bases electrónicas y la estructura de la World music.

Y por último y para valorar la importancia de los Dj’s en este campo no podía faltar Raw Deal .Y en un disco donde la electrónica reina no podía faltar una pincelada de raíces, una licencia que nos permitimos ya que creemos necesario dar una visión del afrobeat que se hace en Extremadura o en Aragón, con el groove afromeño de Gecko Turner y los exploradores de ritmos africanos, Couscous Party

Republicafrobeat Vol.2 es una nueva apuesta de la Asociación Cultural AfrobeatProject en colaboración con Lovemonk. Quiere ser un reconocimiento a músicos como David Byrne por su capacidad de riesgo y por ser pionero en valorar y difundir el afrobeat, al prolífico Will Holand aka Quantic porque pese a su juventud, sigue desarrollándolo y haciéndolo crecer, a los Dj’s que tanto como músicos, remezcladores o a los platos lo propagan cada noche y a todos los que se acercan al afrobeat desde la electrónica o desde la raíces.
