Hometown: Chicago, IL I've been playing house music since 1985. Since I was young I have known that I wanted to be a DJ. I was influenced by all kinds of music but especially soul music, Disco and early Hip Hop. I remember watching Mike "Hitman" Wilson mix House songs and I was like, "Whoa, I wanna do that." I started practicing in the backroom of my Mom's house all day and night. I remember one time I practiced for like a month straight. I didn't eat, I didn't sleep. I was trying to mix these two songs: Dirty talk by Klein MBO and Washing Machine by Fingers Inc. I knew I was obsessed when my Mom went to work, came home, went to sleep, woke up and I was still back there mixing these same two songs...for two days! I finally got that mix to work and I was hooked.
I played in Chicago from 1986 until 1990, DJing at different clubs locally. I also used to promote house parties and big venue parties, and back in the day I hired Bad Boy Bill, Mike "Hitman" Wilson, Julian Perez, Fast Eddie, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, or the original Hot Mix Five. I moved to Colorado in 1992 and DJ'd all over Colorado Springs. Then moved to Vail to play at the legendary Sheikas, where I played House and Garage music until 1996. On my breaks I would fly back and forth to Chicago and produced music under the name "Rhythmcentric." After Sheikas closed I "made my big move" to Denver in 1999. There I hooked up with DJ Sense and formed Casa Del Soul Music Store and Casa Del Soul Records, and we produced a number of influential pieces for our label as well as Tyrant, Hochokai, and Look at You Records. I have played at a number of clubs around Denver covering many genres of music including House, Garage, Tech House, and Old School Hip Hop. CLUBS: Funky Buddha, Vinyl, The Church, Synergy, Amsterdam, Lotus, Lime, Mynt, and 2 a.m. People always ask me about my style of mixing. I would say I have a real technical style because my influences are from both the East Coast and the West Coast. I am a real stickler for perfection in a mix. Some of my influences are Ron Hardy, Ron Trent, Boo Williams, Steve Hurley, Tony Humphries, Gene Farris, Andre Hatchet. I used to listen to those dudes DJ all the time and process what I liked and didn't like about a particular mix or the order of their songs. That's how I honed my skill. Other influences to my style were Wyatt Earp, DJ Ty Tek, DJ Sense, DJ Dealer, DJ Hippie, Jonas Temple, DJ Catt and the early Pound Boys. Their style of mixing added a West Coast spin to the early dance scene that I had never heard before. It was a unique style of playing that I admire. I would have to say that my best experience playing in Denver has been at 2 a.m. It's because of the people. It's all about the people. They are some of the best Denver fans and music critics of dance music you will find, hands down. When I first saw 2 a.m. I knew it was something special. It's the perfect venue for underground dance music. Maybe because it's in an alley, I don't know! Once you walk down those stairs you won't want to leave and that's why I love playing there.
