DJ George William BIO
Born on June 21, 1979 and coming from a musically inclined family with his father having 10 years of experience of being a Disco DJ in the 70's, a mother who loved to sing in the choir, George had the perfect type of open and supportive environment to develop his musical interests. With both a piano in the house and playing the saxophone in school, he developed his ear for sound. At the young age of eight, he was already curious about the records his dad would spin and slowly but surely he would learn tips from his dad on how to work with vinyl. Additionally, having a younger brother that just didn't want to be a DJ (he wanted to be a drummer!), made it more challenging for George when he would have to work extra hard to beat match over his brother Rob's constant loud drumming. Over the years he would learn the merits of both vinyl and CD's while he would spin at house parties and work at TRAXX records, learning about equipment and gear.
Naturally the interest in DJing lead George to the club scene in Toronto in the 90's. When The Guvernment was formed and touted as Toronto's largest and best club, George was seen there nearly every Saturday and imagining the thrills of playing such a venue. It just so happened that he had been going there for about two years when opportunity and desire struck home. Charles Kabouth the owner of the Guvernment had been looking for a new DJ to play the Acid Lounge and after a few conversations together it was agreed George would be able to try it out on a trial-basis. It is now over 8 years later and George is still a solid resident in the Acid Lounge. Growing with some of Toronto's well known DJ's such as Mark Oliver, Manzone & Strong and
Deko-ze, George had the support and friendship of solid talent and mutual respect, in a highly competitive industry.
People that really get to know George can see that his sets often reflect the mood he is in, when he is felling great his music takes on a more jubilant, playful vibe, when he is feeling more on the sombre side his sets will be more experimental. Perhaps the fact that his astrological sign is a Cancer dictates his sensitivity and ability to absorb and express all the emotions he feels through the art of music.
In fact, George has stated he is a big believer of being able to mix any two songs together, no matter what they are. Many an after party has showcased this as well, with him mixing in original old vinyl tracks like Tiffany's "I Think Were Alone Now" and Charles and Eddie's track "Would I Lie To You" with a backing throbbing house beat in the background.
His experimental mixes have found him creating his own anthems for his fans like mixing Harry Choo Choo Romero’s “What Happened” with Dr Kucho's “Lies to Yourself”. The intoxicating mix of A Story’s “SOS” Skylark mix with Shakedown’s “At Night” the Kid Crème version and Bodyrock's “Yeah Yeah” the D. Ramirez mix with Green Velvet’s “Shake and Pop”.
His self produced and released mix of “The Love of My Life” in 2003 has been stated by many a fan to be one of their favourite CD's which signifies a more melodic, funky, and inspiring, different house music era from today where electro, minimal and tech over-saturate. That being said, George is not one to shun any type of music. Regular Acid Lounge followers can attest to the variability of his sets. There will be times when more electro dominates his sets or sometimes when a darker tribal form of funk is heard as well as times when a funkier deep house feel is offered to the dancer.
Consequently, George's talents have not gone unnoticed. Looking around the friends he's made over the years he can count more than a handful who have also decided to take up the art of being a DJ after being his supporters. Although ask him and he won't say, it's proof that his talent is inspiring to others who also have the desire to move people to their sounds after experiencing many magical, moving nights on the dance floor.
George has played some of Toronto's best hotspots for lounging, dancing and socializing both on land and on water including: Film Lounge, The Comfort Zone, Beba Lounge, Viva, Pur Supper Club, Area 51, System Soundbar, Charlies’, Li'ly Lounge, Wicked, Room 19, The River Gambler, Space, The Drake Hotel, The Silver Dollar Room and Funhaus.
His chief residency is the Acid Lounge within The Guvernment, but he has also played the main room on more than one occasion. George is very lucky to be one of the clubs long term residents. Whereas The Guvernment's Gallery has many DJ's fighting for scheduled spots on sometimes bi-weekly or tri-weekly rotations, George is able to have an entire room to showcase his talent from 11pm-4am. Seeing the Acid Lounge through now three renovations, George is happy and honoured to be a part of the Guvernment legacy and continues to provide his talents and sounds to the ever-ready followers in the room.
He has a fierce following, but is a humble fellow...
