Interests

  • General

Lurking in small independent music stores and giving the owners more money than I can afford, cycling home through quiet streets at 5.30am, badly singing along to songs I like but whose words I can never totally remember(don't hire me as your lead singer), mountains, saving the planet from environmental destruction - unfortunately my super hero powers aren't up to much but I'll do my best, shaking my arse on the dancefloor(don't trust a dj who doesn't dance , they can't like the music they're playing), food, generally being nice and honest(someone has to), people watching whilst trying to guess their personality, New Balance trainers, laughing at my misfortunes, verbally advertising the comfort benefits of Birkenstock sandles(easier now I live in Spain & wear them more than 4 times a year), making bad jokes in my terrible Spanish to bemused Spanish people(try translating irony with only 30 verbs and crap grammar), wondering why my hair is dispearing from my head and reappearing on parts of my body where I don't require it, plus loads of other shit. I'm generally well rounded though possibly slightly disfunctional.
  • Music

Listen to my radio show and dj mixes at WWW.GLOBALSOULJAH.COM

Kotchy, Elvin Jones, The Specials, Candido, Bobby Valentin, Fela Kuti, Lukid, Tony Allen, Terry Callier, Curtis Mayfield, Koushik, Madlib, Amadou & Mariam, Oi Va Voi, Jazz Jamaica, Ed Lincoln, IG Culture, Ed Motta, Ernest Ranglin, Jimi Tenor, Rokia Traore, Robert Logan, Salif Keita, The Bollywood Brass Band, Les Nubians, N'Dambi, Ray Barretto, Kako, Tito Puente, Joey Pastrani, Sub Swara, Nitin Sawney, Ojos De Brujo, King Sunny Ade, Elmore Judd, RSL, Chronomad, DJ Dolores, Meneo, Mercan Dede, Filaria, Pharoah Sanders, Gotan Project, Ska Cubano, Jazzy Jeff, Lone, Dexter Wansell, Mos Def, Winston Groovy, Quentin Harris, Mad Professor, Yusef Lateef, Swami, Tommy Guerro, James Brown, T-Love, Herbert, Mike Ladd, Amp Fiddler, The Roots, Seu Jorge, Meshell NDegeocello, Alice Coltrane, Soundspecies, The Angel Brothers, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Leon Thomas, Erik Trufaz, Eddie & Charlie Palmieri, Eddie Cano, Jack Constanza, Mocky, Mongo Santamaria, Joe Cuba, Telefon Tel Aviv, Lura, Arcadion, Carl Hancock Rux, Emmanuel Jal, Gil Scott-Heron, Donald Byrd, Fertile Ground, Kinnego Flux, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Victor Davies, Stevie Wonder, Boxcutter, Lila Downs, Khaled, Finn Peters, Knaan, Bullion, Lars Bartkuhn, Andy Palacio

You get the idea, there's a few and the list is just a taster and I didn’t download any of them - IF YOU LOVE THE MUSIC, PAY FOR IT! Support the record labels, artists, distributors and independent shops that do such a good job. If you don't I hope your hard drive crashes and someone steals your MP3 player.. ..
  • Movies

Old Boy - a properly twisted, dark, disturbing yet gripping film with a ‘just as you thought it couldn't get any worse ending'

Dark Days - Reality tv makers should all be made to watch this...

Basically anything thought provoking, original and slightly twisted will get me to watch, an unhappy ending is a bonus. I like to dilute this with the odd hollywood outing. I never thought I'd like George Clooney but he's getting more interesting as he get's older(in a cinematic way!)
  • Television

Haven't got a tv, too much music to listen to and most tv is crap anyway. If you want reality don't watch it on tv, try opening you front door and getting a life.
  • Books

Books are almost as good as dusty old records.. Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the best thing to come out of Colombia since The Lebron Brothers, Julian Y Su Combo and Sidestepper. Last Night a DJ Saved my Life by Bill Brewster & Frank Broughton. Everything you wanted to know about the history of djing and loads of interesting stuff you didn't want to know.. All DJs check out Brewsters other books, essential DJ reading..
A Serious Life - DM Mitchell. A fascinating look into the Savoy publishing house, Manchester based publishers of 'contentious' books and comics and also an underground record label. It not only gives you a list of authors you need in your life, it is a great tribute to the struggles of all people doing what they believe in the face of misunderstanding, apathy, downright hostility and financial difficulties. It will also make you re-evaluate your moral viewpoint.
Anything by Alan Moore the best thing to come out of Northampton since Carlsberg beer, Vinyl Underground and my good self.
  • Heroes

Fela Kuti for persistant resistance in the face of extreme adversity & for being one of the funkiest geezers ever.
Just buy all his music and if you want a fascinating insight into the mans life then check the DVD - Fela Kuti, Music is The Weapon.

About me:

GLOBAL SOULJAH IS MANY THINGS:

RADIO PRESENTER: Weekly FM radio show broadcast on Scanner 96.6FM. in and around Barcelona and Planet Radio in Tenerife. An hour of music where pretty much anything goes. Subscribe to the weekly podcast HERE if you like.

MUSICAL CONSULTANT: I am currently programming a world music in-store soundtrack for a chain of outdoor clothing stores in Spain, Italy and Portugal. I have James Bond villain like plans to slowly inflict my taste in music on the brands and shoppers of the world. CHECK the consultancy page on my website for some more information.

DJ: Playing what could be loosely described as where music of black origin and global grooves meet a techno future which gives me plenty of options, just how I like it. What can be guaranteed though is I'll be dancing when I'm djing and there is a fair chance you will be as well. LISTEN to my radio show and some of my eclectic dj mixes at my website

PROMOTER: I am the promoter of THE COSMIC JAM guesting people like DJ Food, Nouvelle Vague, Bonobo, 7 Samurai, The Herbaliser, Scott Nixon, King Cannibal, Seiji, Mark Force, DK, Saffrolla, DJ Wrongtom, DJ Moneyshot

MUSIC JOURNALIST: A new string to my bow. I am now reviewing 5-8 albums a month for three English language magazines here in Catalunya & Valencia with a combined print run of 75,000. The reviews also get syndicated to various websites.

WHAT AM I ABOUT?
Quality music, intelligent programming & original thinking.. Ethical behaviour, sustainable living & striving for a better future.

Happy faces and plenty of arse shaking on the dance floor.
