9 True Things You May Not Know About Radio People - The Veil Of Secrecy Is Lifted!!
1. 50% of our wardrobes really do consist of free t-shirts: t-shirts from Radio stations we've worked for, t-shirts given to us for participating in charity events and t-shirts from movie and record promtions. If you are ever at a garage sale and you see more than 2 t-shirts with Radio station logos on them, chances are very good a Radio person lives there. (Make sure you fumigate anything you buy.)
2. Evening DJs get propositioned more than any other air-shift, usually from under-age females. Being seduced by any of these little pixies is also known as "walking the jail-bait tightrope".
3."Rule of the Phones": if she sounds sexy, more times than not, she isn't.Generally, the ladies who call into Radio stations, in the hopes of luring the DJ into some kind of rendevouz, fall into one of these categories: 1) someone Richard Simmons should be praying next to 2) Stalkers or 3) 14 year-old Lolitas who are fully prepared to testify in court.
4. You can get on almost any Radio station to promote something if you bring the morning show food.Morning DJs lose all sense of propriety, right, and wrong when you offer them a cinnamon bun with enough icing to put a diabetic into a coma. Other sure-fire ways into the studio: pizza, subs, ribs (big in the South), donuts, and Starbucks.
5. You're not crazy: Radio people really ARE weird.Seriously. Some of them are close to psychotic. Most probably fall into the middle: safely bizarre. Why? Nobody knows. The best we can figure, there is something about the mixture of power to control a medium and the ability to perform on it which attracts this one segment of society which could not possibly function within the confines of a standard, 9 - 5 job. Is it any wonder more and more health care plans in Radio now offer psychological benefits? Mmmm?
6.Yes, we really DO get fired as much as you've heard. Radio people get fired because formats change, because ratings go down, because Radio stations get sold, because of budget cuts, because of vendettas, because some drink too much and don't show up for work, because some drink too much and DO show up for work, and because morals clauses in contracts are sometimes broken (Please see: Evening DJs).
7. You don't want to see us in person.Really. We usually look: fatter, thinner, older, and younger than you thought. We never equal your imagination. We should be required to wear ski masks on all external outings - for the good of all humanity.
8. We're pathetic whiners.Really. We bitch and moan about how hard it is to drag our butts out of bed at 3 A.M.just so we can sit on our ass for four hours and talk. Please.
9. We have a high divorce rate. Why? For starters we move around a lot. You should only marry someone in Radio if you either 1) have a personal U-Haul 2) have a relative in the moving business or 3) you have tiny little wheels surgically attached to the bottoms of your feet. Besides the moving problem, marriages and relationships of Radio people are constantly tested by fans who come on to them. (Please see: Evening DJs.)

Well, where should I startā¦.I guess from the beginning would be nice, right?
If the name DJ-Grrrl hasnāt given it away yet, I LOVE radio! Iāve been running around since I was just a ālil grrrl with a radio on, and recording myself pretending to be on the airā¦;-) I've probably called every DJ that I've ever heard on the air just to find out anything I could about being on the radio! As I got older, this obsession never went away..so I knew that this is what I was meant to do!
Iāve always been into music, mostly the Top 40, current stuffā¦.but I can usually be found listening to lots of other stuff....from oldies to country..I love it all! I also love to go to concerts!
More about meā¦well, I'm a single mommy, I have 2 kids. My daughter, Caitlin is 9, and my son Aaron just turned 5 in June and will be starting kindergarten in September! Wow, they grow up fast! Check out my pics to see the ālil ones.
Other than that, I like to hang out at home⦠I like to go out, but Iām not much into the bar sceneā¦so that pretty much wipes out hanging out in the Pocono's! LOL. Iām into my computer a lot, I have a HUGE MP3 list..so you know what I like to doā¦;-) I also like messing around with video and editing. Right now I'm working on a documentary for a movie called "Tapped".
Geez, how else to describe myself....I can be quiet and shy at first, but get to know me and you'll find a totally silly, outgoing, sensitive and down to earth girl! I love music, any and all music...:-) I'm a radio nut..and yah, I'm nuts! I love chillin and hangin with friends and my ibook...:-) Also, the new addition to my computer Geek-ism is my new 24 inch iMac! I absolutely LOVE it!!
Other than that, Iām just a grrrlā¦a DJ-Grrrlā¦check out my blog for updates!

Some of DJ-Grrrl's favorite radio stations!
Q-100....Where it all started! LOL....this was my favorite radio station as a kid...then after they switched to Hot 99.9, they sucked, so I started listening to Laser 104.1..which is now....B104...:-) Q100 is important because my earliest radio memories come from this station. That one and another station I remember hearing ...Magic 103, WMGK. I remember hearing the DJ's on Q100 and wanting to be on the radio! When I was 14 years old, I met a DJ at our local radio station, WSBG...Mick Ryder, who was also a DJ on Q100 back in the day! He let me come and hang out at the radio station and help out with some stuff like answering the request line, etc. This is where I got to see how a radio station works and what it's like to do a show on the air! Mick taught me a lot about radio, and showed me some of the basics...and that next summer I got a spot on 90.3 WESS, East Stroudsburg University Radio! It was my first radio show, before I could drive a car! I did that for two summers and had a blast doing it! My mom also had a lot to do with my obsession with radio and music, because of her love for music and always having the radio on in the house. Some of my most favorite childhood memories involved music somehow. Thanks mom..:-) (sniffle sniffle). My mom was always the one to bring a pile of her Beatles albums and other bands she liked into my room and sit there for hours playing all the songs she grew up with. I loved hearing all the stories she had behind each song!
Later on in my life, I decided to go back to school and got a degree in Radio/TV...and I had to do an internship at B104 in Allentown. This is where I met the evening DJ, Scott Lowe...It's kinda funny, because I knew of Scott for many years before we actually met. I used to hear him when I was younger on B104, and 97.5 PST back in the day! He figured out that I should be doing more than answering the phones, and taught me the rest of what I needed to know about being on the air. He helped me with many demos and coached me a lot on talking on the air, and basically got me sounding good enough to land a part time spot on Max 106.3 in Franklin, NJ! My first "real" radio job! I did that for a few months until an opening came up on a new radio station in New York City called Fresh 102.7! Scott encouraged me to apply, but I wasn't sure I would get a call back, or if I was good enough for that yet...but I had nothing to lose! Besides all of Scott's help with demos and radio basics, he gave me a lot of confidence, which I think had a lot to do with my success so far....Cuz here I am today, I love radio, music and being on the air! It really is a dream I had my whole life! Now, you can hear me on the air in New York City on Fresh 102.7 Saturday and Sunday nights from 8pm to 1am! Thanks to the awesome DJ's I've met along the way who helped me get
90.3 WESS FM, East Stroudsburg University Radio....My very first radio show, before I could drive a car!! I was just a lil' DJ-GrrrL!
KRZ is kind of a new one, I didn't start getting into the Jumpin' Jeff Walker show until the late 90's. KTU and Z100..well...NY radio rocks!

DJ-Grrrl hit New York City! Seeing this tree up close, and even better, ICE SKATING under it was one of my "Bucket List" items...
And here's a few more random pics I took while I was there....
We'll have to make Double Dare tshirts and have our families compete against each other. Wouldn't that be fun - oh wait...you'd have to be Marc Summers so I guess that idea wouldn't work :(
Yay!! Yeah, it's totally awesome! The computer didn't bother me at all. I stayed away from it for the first day or two anyway, but I guess I lucked out, lol.
