The way Analodjica and Kokeshi communicate is typically feminine,
they dispense the need for words, even when choosing music during
their energetic and seductive DJ sets. They instinctively know what the
other is thinking, or what each other’s next move will be. This form of
communication is known as “female intuition”, and the whole concept
behind it fits perfectly with the DJ duo known as Heartbreakerz.
They are undeniably feminine; these two young women who decided to take
the typically male dominated club scene by storm, with their excess baggage
and make up in tow. Thankfully the days where women were relegated to
minor roles, or where they had to forsake their female touch in order to be
heard and respected, are long over.
Kokeshi’s relationship with music is therapeutic, a sort of an old friendship
that has lasted for as long as she can remember. Analodjica takes a more
elaborate stance, she sees music as drawing from architectural sources. In
her view “Music isn’t always a physical phenomenon, it can also be a mental
one with a mathematical structure behind it.”
Even though their views differ, the girls find harmony in what brought them
together in the first place – the single minded desire to prove that they can
rock a dancefloor just as well, if not better than their male counterparts.
Together they face down every challenge to prove their merit, effortlessly
converting non-believers into rabid followers at every turn.
Heartbreakerz play an intoxicating and seductive blend of music. It would
be perfectly natural to hear them mixing Minimal Techno with the sounds
of 80’s New Wave, since they mention John Digweed and Joy Division in
the same breath. At times they will drop an electro track that harkens back
to the sounds heard at the beginning of the century. The two girls mould
and shape their influences to create their own unique form of techno, like a
rollercoaster filled with twists and turns, highs and lows, the kind that moves
muscles in your body that you didn’t even know reacted to music.
Even though they play a vast array of different sounds, their flawless mixing
technique ensures that their unique crossing of genres is always coherent
and flexible enough to allow them to adapt to any crowd or situation; from
warming up dancefloors for the likes of Minilogue to headlining at Portugal’s
most notorious nightclub, Lux.
The two girls have played together for 7 years, however they have only truly
come into their own as an inseparable duo in the last three years.
So, how did it all start? Kokeshi started deejaying as a cure for boredom
while recovering from a nasty bout chickenpox.
She was prescribed a nondescript pink ointment and a week’s bed rest by her
doctor… and a mixer by her friends. The illness passed, and the only scars
that remained were from the tracks she spliced together during this time.
For Analodjica it was love that led her to the decks. She fell for a DJ and
committed her first act of rebellion, by jumping out of her bedroom window,
to join him at an after hours club. She returned home after this adventure
with her head spinning and decided then and there that she would have
to start deejaying in similar places. Analodjica has since admitted that the
early morning spots are her favourite “battle grounds”, due to her memories
of those times and to the fact that this is where the true music enthusiasts
commune to celebrate their love of the dancefloor.
The duo met in a record store and, based on the so-called female sixth sense,
Kokeshi invited Analodjica to play at her eighteenth birthday. Analodjica
didn’t know why she should play at the party of a girl she hardly knew, but
something told her she would have fun. The girls have fond memories of that
night.
It often feels that what has happened since has been a dream: In Portugal
they have deejayed in the biggest and most respected nightspots – Lux,
OpArt, Indústria and at last years’ Boom Festival. They have shared DJ
booths with international dance music legends such as Minilogue, Kasey
Taylor, DJ T, Hernan Cattaneo, D-Nox, Beckers and Stereo Addiction,
among others.
When the girls get behind the decks they feel a huge rush at being at the
controls, but at the same time they love the feeling they get when they step
back onto the dancefloor.
Every time Analodjica and Kokeshi play they prove to anyone and everyone
that they are not just a pair of pretty faces behind the decks, bringing a
unique spark to a dance music scene in desperate need of a woman’s touch.
They have flawless mixing skills and dancefloor sensibilities, intuitively
knowing what a crowd wants at any given time.
Heartbreakerz often lead anyone within earshot of their powerful sound to
believing that nowhere on earth is a better place to be than on the dancefloor
when they are at the controls: This is a place where labels and categories do
not exist, where verbal communication is unnecessary, and where anyone
who falls under the sensual spell they cast will undoubtedly be back to have
their heart broken time and time again.
