Nottingham has produced some fine DJs to date, and it seems there is another on the horizon. Despite having only been DJing professionally for a relatively short time, Joe Napier has become somewhat of a star amongst his loyal following. His first appearance behind the decks came with a family member’s chance meeting with a one time promoter of The Emporium, Coalville. Joe passed on a demo and instantly grabbed himself a residency at Nottingham techno night, Electronika. Since then Joe’s ascent of the DJ ladder has been unstoppable, astounding crowds with his technical abilities and great ear for good music, he truly has the ability to set any dancefloor alight.
Not allowing himself to be pigeonholed musically, he plays not only sets incorporating trance, techno and a little hard dance but also house, electro and fidget. ‘‘I like all dance music so I can’t stick to the same style,’’ he says, ‘‘I like one genre just as much as the next. I play good music...’’
It all came together for Joe when he was approached by the mighty Gatecrasher offering him a residency at their uber-cool club, Ultra Gatecrasher in Nottingham. An offer he hastily snapped up. Since then he has been featured in IDJ magazine and has played alongside some of trance and hard dance's biggest superstars including Eddie Halliwell, Judge Jules, Brandon Block, Above & Beyond, Gareth Emery, Lange, Matt Hardwick, John O'Callaghan, Paul Webster, Simon Patterson, Super8 & Tab, Genix, Andy Whitby, Andy Farley, Paul Glazby, A.D.A.M. Lab4, Paul Maddox, JP & Jukesy, Technikal, Dark by Design, K90, Ben Stevens, Ian M, The Tidy DJ's, Rodi Style, Jordan Suckley, Garbo, Jimmy Dean, Ben Gold, Mike Foyle, Paul Kershaw, Manuel Le Saux, Activa, Steve Thomas and many more.
He is the owner, resident and promoter of two Nottingham based club nights. The latest being Noise Control, a bass orientated night with the emphasis on electro, fidget, bassline, dubstep and drum 'n' bass, held every Friday at Ultra Gatecrasher, Nottingham. His main venture, however, is Rompastomp, Nottingham’s premier trance and hard dance club night. In its short history Rompastomp has taken Nottingham’s once devoid of bosh club scene and injected it with the stomping ground it so badly needed.
Now an established DJ and promoter, Joe has turned his hand to producing. Determined to add another string to his musical bow, he somehow manages to squeeze the studio time into his already hectic schedule. After a long overdue wait, Joe's debut track entitled Interaction is ready for release and has already got huge support from the likes of Armin van Buuren, Judge Jules, M.I.K.E. aka Push, Woody Van Eyden, Ernesto vs Bastian, Manuel Le Saux, K90, Ben Nicky and Vicky Devine amongst others.
Joe is definitely one to keep an eye on. So watch this space, because this boy’s going places…
★ Gatecrasher Nottingham have had a massive refurbishment and have returned to their rightful place at the top of Nottingham's nightlife hierarchy. The club, now named Ultra Gatecrasher have employed Joe as a promoter and weekly resident to host one of their rooms every Friday.
