The Legendary radio personality Maria Cristina Ruiz joins as a guest with original Discoteca mixer DJ Jorge Ojeda, also with El Chi Chi Carlos Jose & JC on The Radio for a Special tribute to the BEST RADIO SHOW in the 80's, and NOW!!!
Born in Acarigua, Venezuela with parents from Cuba & Spain, DJ Jorge Ojeda hails from Miami, Florida since the early age of 9 months. He began his DJ career at the age of 11 in the early 80‘s. Growing up in the most southern part of Miami known as Cutler Ridge/Perrine, he was inspired by the mix of music that merged from late 70’s Disco, Funk and contemporary Dance releases of that time. What was later called early 80’s Freestyle and Electro Funk would definitely play a crucial role in Ojeda’s direction and career.
As the sound of Electro Funk and Latin Hip Hop Dance music began to flourish out of New York and Miami, he was also drawn to the new sound developing out of Miami’s underground: Electro Bass. By the time he was 15, he already established his name and the name of his DJ crew “The Sound Of Destiny DJ’s”; known for the fiercest Electro Funk, Miami Bass and Freestyle sets on the streets of Miami. This would open doors and land him as a mixologist on Miami Latin radio station Super Q 107.5, where Ojeda would not only mix Disco classics and Freestyle, but include the formula of Electro Funk and classic Synth-Pop to the mix of Hi-NRG and Italo Disco imports. He was a master mixer on “La Disco-Teca del Aire along side Miami’s own legendary broadcasting DJ, Maria Cristina Ruiz. Through the mid to late 80’s, with his popular following, Ojeda joined the Urban Hip Hop/R&B station Rhythm 98.3 FM, which was programmed under the direction of “Funky Frank” Walsh. DJ Jorge Ojeda was notorious for some of the fiercest Electro Funk, Miami Bass and 80’s Rap sets. In the process, DJ Jorge Ojeda was breaking and introducing many Dance records and artist at the street level via urban radio. Later, after the end of the Rhythm days Jorge Ojeda would join another radio station and introduce his master mixes and remixes on Miami’s, Power 96.5 FM.
Around the time of 1986 at a young age, Ojeda would open up his own label and recording studio, DESTUNE RECORDS, and also launch his own group, The Sound Of Destiny, who would later have the radio and club hit “Its All About You”. This marks Ojeda as one of Miami’s youngest DJ/Producers in history.
By the late 80’s Jorge Ojeda was not only on two different radio stations with his own mix shows, but touring the country and abroad. Spinning and performing with his group in some of Miami’s key mega clubs: Club 1235 (Today known as Mansion), Rick’s bar, Hot Wheels, Casanova’s, The Cameo (Today formerly Crowbar and now Cameo/Vice), Biscayne Babies and a long list of radio and mall parties. In later years, his Destune label would produce, remix and collaborate many projects for various pop Dance groups of that day and also co-own the label Ten-Lion records, with former partner and friend Vic-Ten. Ten-Lion, known for the trio Teaz II Pleaz “I Want You”, would temporarily merge as Ten-Destune. By the late 80’s and early 90’s Ojeda would infuse experimental records that would later resurface in the techno funk realm. By the early 90’s, Miami’s Freestyle community of labels was fast coming to extinction. The high energetic, Electro and underground sounds of the Miami Freestyle style were over. New York’s “new school” sound would give the genre a short-lived resurrection, although would be claimed dead by mainstream industry standards.
The irony is that the Freestyle sound was claimed extinct, when in fact Miami’s Electro Freestyle sound and Bass was reincarnating in the rising Florida Rave and Breaks scene. Ojeda’s DESTUNE would be the only Freestyle label to release his experimental productions that would resurface through the underground techno rave through the mid 90’s Acid Phunk/Triphop Freestyle movement. Ahead if its time, the records would be overlooked and lost in a shuffle through his side imprint labels, Street Beat and Quad Force Records. This would also include “Imagination” by Hilda Marie; also produced by Electro Bass veteran Debonair. Cultivating a younger following as a DJ and label, he followed the advice and blessings of long time friend and label owner George Alvarado of Nitebeat records and would later re-release the Jorge Ojeda/ S.O.D. “Mindscape” collection. Thus gaining attention from many underground and college radio stations including The University of Miami, 90.5 FM.
With doors opened for a promising path with his new sound, Ojeda instead closed his long time running record store, Metro-Music, and focused on filling the void of vocal Dance records coming from Miami’s Latin youth. Miami’s Freestyle and Bass music through Destune continued to give a sense of identity and sound for the Latin youth population growing up in Miami. Over the years Ojeda would spend long hours in the studio working on anonymous production projects, at times using his alias “Andy Alvarez”. Jorge Ojeda continued to focus on Destune and produce the last album for the third batch of Teaz II Pleaz girls featuring Hilda Marie, which included their single “Games Of Love”.
By 1996 he would establish the very first website and online community for the Freestyle genre, www.freestylemusic.com, dedicated to Freestyle music and the Freestyle community. Around the same time, he would team up with party promoter JONPITO and establish Freestyle parties around Miami, as well as helping other promoters and artist re-establish a scene. By the turn of the century, Ojeda’s DESTUNE RECORDS would be the last surviving official Miami Freestyle label, as Ten-Lion, Detour and remaining few labels closed their doors.
In the years to come, Ojeda would concentrate more on the freestylemusic.com website. The label would at moderation continue to distribute and sell units online of its roster of present and past releases, including material from Sound Of Destiny “It’s All About You”, Los Sucios “Love Is Blind”, “Veterans Like It”, Frankie Boy (Now Frankie J), Teaz II Pleaz, Rosie, Felix and many others. In time Ojeda would concentrate in other aspects of his life and would reach positions in the telecommunications and technological fields, at the same time becoming a father to his first child. The label would for a short period remain open, yet dormant from much activity. Ojeda would continue to spin at parties as a DJ and continue to be the resident at the annual Tai Shan Ball, Miami’s Longest running Freestyle Industry Event, which showcases many artist and DJ’s from around the globe. The Tai Shan Ball still continues to take place every year during the Winter Music Conference week in Miami.
In the last few years Ojeda’s DJ career and sound has re-launched itself from the least expected scenes. From spread out warehouse parties for Electro kids to Latin, Brazilian, Black and Gay Dance floors. Today Ojeda’s mixing style, sound and productions is rising as fast as the 80’s Electro revival. His past musical upbringing and experience has launched the DESTUNE label into a new era of productions and direction. His mix of Neo-Freestyle records crossing over from the past Electro Clash, Electro Breaks, Bass, and Nu-Freestyle labels is causing frenzy between both purist and those searching for new inspirational sounds.
DJ Jorge Ojeda has also mixed in Miami rooms like Salvation/1771, Score, Ozone, Quench, Soho Lounge, Oxygen Lounge, Deck 23, The Laundry Bar, Voodoo Lounge, and many other venues and guest spots. His heavy use of new vocal Electro House and classic Hi-NRG sounds is filling a void for a market that is hungry for new Dance music. At a time period where Dance music is changing and the sound of House music is taking in many elements and traits from early 80’s Electro, Freestyle and Hi-NRG, Ojeda clearly resurrects the links from yesteryears to the sound of tomorrow.
As a producer he has already began production and remix work for various artist on the new DESTUNE roster, as well as provided electro remixes for material from Eurhythmics, Ying Yang Twins, Dance Planet X, Nelly Furtado and various Dance and R&B artist geared to the Neo-Freestyle Electro underground movement. The Freestyle Music dot Com website continues to be one of the most visited web sites dedicated to Freestyle and Dance music; as well as hosting its own internet radio station and pod cast. With DJ Jorge Ojeda and JONPITO heading A&R and artist development, the label DESTUNE now stands with an International roster of Electro House and Electro Dance artists, DJ/producers and re-mixers as a network; including Spain’s ARNAU, Germany’s SUPREMEJA, DOMINANCE ELECTRICITY, CAT COMPLEX, THE HEADBANGERS, 2MANTRIBE, Lydia “Lee “Love” Gonzalez, Jessica Lopez of Amaretto, Vanessa Conde, Safire, Shannon and many others in his long roster list.
In 2007, Ojeda released his first ever self-titled release DJ JORGE OJEDA feat. Diane Baez “Get Away”. Featuring vocals by former Jellybean recordings/Sony artist D’luna the China Doll. It can be found as a beatport.com exclusive, as well as many other Destune Records releases.
In 2k7 and 2k8 DESTUNE will stand with one of the largest digital distribution networks, not only standing as the last of a long line of original Miami Freestyle Dance labels, but as the first in a new fleet and generation of labels holding the key to future Freestyle and all things in Electro Dance. Ojeda as a DJ and producer, as well as the DESTUNE label, are like finding a rare classic pop dance vinyl record in mint condition still wrapped in its original plastic. Something classic, yet something new, clear and ready to make people dance.
