In 1982 I started this mission to become a "Dj" in Del Rio, Texas at Laughlin AFB. I performed as a rapper and light tech for a band on the base. We also did shows in the local community. My specialty was the song "Rapper's Delight". I would rap for 15 to 20 minutes at times. Being newly married and with my first daughter on the way there wasn't much money for equipment so my dream had to wait.
In 1984 I was transferred to Eielson AFB, Alaska, there my dream took root. I was able to scrape together enough money to buy 2 Technic SLB 100 turntables. I already had an amp and 2 speakers, but they were for home use. After entering a Battle of the Dj's I found that home stereos wouldn't make it. I had to get more stuff! I purchased a real amp, a Yamaha B-6, real speaker from a Dj named "RC", and two 1200's from a friend of a Dj named Eddie Ray. I named myself "R-Tic Mix Co." and the saga began. Eddie and I teamed up to form 1 dj group. We split everything 50/50. RC would give me some gigs, I would get gigs from the bases' NCO Club, and Eddie had Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks locked down. We rocked the arctic for the next 2 years with the Penguins, Polar Bears and the Eskimos.
In 1987 I was reassigned to Travis AFB, California. Hooked up with a Dj named Dj "D" and tore a new one at the base NCO Club and through out The Bay area. I changed my name to Smooth Roughness Inc. and continued to play and practice everyday, because only practice makes a real Jam Master!
In 1993 after returning home to Akron, Ohio I simplified things. I changed my name for the last time to Dj Lance. Smooth Roughness became the company and I haven't looked back since. I can now handle Any Party, Any Where, Any Time. The company name implies a smooth show that's on the cutting edge. All-n-all, a professional show is guaranteed.
There are a lot of people that helped me along the way......a lot. I must say to them Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Without your support and encouragement I would not have been able to endure the hard time and cherish the good times. I will always love you!
Today I’m with Mo’ Better Entertainment and still, doing the damn thang, and the saga.......... continues!
