It has been said; that it is important to remember where you come from, in order to get the proper perspective on where you are going. Just ask Master Jay, and I'm sure he will agree that it was his personal experience while growing up in the city that has laid the foundation for his musical street smarts/savvy as well as motivation, determination and consistency. Master Jay is recognized and respected worldwide as "The White Jamaican" of Reggae and Hip-Hop music, and culture! He has received numerous awards and accolades and continues to make strides in the entertainment industry.
While growing up, Jay hung out at parties thrown by Grandmaster Flash, Red Alert, Pete DJ Jones, and later Funkmaster Flex, Tony Touch, and many more at clubs throughout the New York Tri-State area. Master Jay watched the way they blended the vinyl and studied the style of music they played -- James Brown, Dennis Coffey, Baby Huey, The Isley Brothers, Sugarhill Gang, and Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force just to name a few! It wasn't long before he was jammin' at parties on his own equipment. By the time Jay hit Boston he had gathered enough record selection and record spinning insight to hold his own. It was still important to be up on what was happening on the New York scene however, so Jay continued to frequent legendary parties throughout New York. He gained an interest for radio and decided to try his hand in the business.
In 1997 Jay was invited to become a Radio DJ / Personality on 91.7 WMWM at Salem State College. He stayed there climbing his way to the top and after alot of hard work and dedication, in May of 2000, Jay was offered a position at Boston's Legendary Jam'n 94.5 working with Cadillac Jack who is a legendary programmer in the radio broadcasting industry! He quickly accepted and joined as the host of "The Friday Throwdown" and "The Saturday Night Bomb" which are the highest rated mixshows in the city alongside the "Big Dawg Pitbull" DJ Roy Barboza. From there Jay's career quickly took off, landing him Afternoon Drive on Connecticut's Jammin 107.7 as well as Assistant Program Director and Music Director duties. While there he created a daily mixshow titled "The 5 O'Clock Traffic Jam" which got rave reviews, and high ratings from listeners! He has also worked on 107.1 WERZ in New Hampshire alongside the legendary Ralphie Marino who has been an instrumental part of Jay's career. Ralphie has worked at Hot 97 and KTU' in NYC, as well as Jam'n 94.5 and Star 93.7 in Boston to name a few.
His long list of experience helped Jay learn the tricks of the trade. Now a seasoned veteran as radio jock, club jock and studio man, Master Jay has established his place as one of the world's premier DJ's. To top it off Jay owns a DJ and entertainment company, Master Jay Entertainment. The company garnered a reputation for promoting some of the hottest parties, and breaking some of the best artists in New England. Jay continues to be a catalyst for a lot of up and coming DJ's and artists. He represents the history and future of Reggae music, and hip-hop music and culture. He is constantly surging forward to break new ground in this business called entertainment. Master Jay says, "You have to learn how to break a new artist on record by working it in and out with familiar records. People are scared to fall. It's OK to fall. You must learn how to fall and be strong so you can come back. A DJ is like the pied piper." With his attitude toward life and professionalism regarding his craft, surely we are in good hands!
When he's not on the radio, he can be found spinning Hip Hop, Reggae, Soca, Konpa, House, Top 40, and more at Boston area venues. Master Jay has played for various high schools, colleges, clubs, and bars over the years. Some of the places where he has played include: The Tunnel in New York, The Palace, The Diplomat in Saugus, Club Craze in New Hampshire, Boston College, Mount Ida College, U Mass Amherst, Emerson College, Northeastern University, Salem State College, Skycap Plaza, Kay's Oasis, 3C's (Caribbean Cultural Center), Maximo's, The Point, Champions, Ultra 88 inside the Mohegan Sun Casino, and Bella Notte Nightclub in Connecticut just to name a few. Master Jay is available for nightclubs, weddings, boat cruises, and birthday parties for all ages.
