The situation I'm in - if it's funky, I'm funky. If it's rock, I'm rock. If it's trippy, then I'm trippy. I tell people I'm "Situation-Specific"...
19 + years behind the decks gives DJ Medi4 (Bradley Burlingame) a unique view on DJ'ing and music, in general. Born in Cleveland, Ohio and now living in Los Angeles, California, DJ Medi4 simply cannot stick to one style of music.
"Life's too short to play only 1 kind of music. And it's a shame, considering that's how most DJ's break out. They pigeon-hole themselves as a House DJ, a Hip Hop DJ, and you're stuck. You wake up at 40 years old still playing records with a 6 month shelf-life at 127 BPM, dying to play records that mean something to you. I'm doing it the other way around..."
"DJ's seem to be the only ones that listen to (or play) one kind of music. It's just not reflective of people's music collections, especially DJ's personal collections. "Hell, DJ's are the biggest music freaks of them all - it just puzzles me that they limit themselves..."
Medi4 simply wants to take the idea of DJ'ing back to where it was in the beginning. "In the 1970's when the DJ concept was just starting to sink in, nobody gave a shit what genre of tunes you played. You either played great records or you didn't. Personally, I think people still think that way, you just gotta present the idea correctly, and have some taste and timing."
"I almost retired in 2001 and decided that if I was going to continue DJ'ing, that I was going to play my favorite records - records that really turned me on, regardless of what genre they were in. I love rock, blues & soul just as much as I like electronic music, so why I can't I play both, yknow? You just have to find shows and situations to play in where you can fit your style of music into..."
"I feel just as comfortable played chilled-out house and downtempo sets as I do in full-blown party situations. To me, it's all about the challenge of being situation-specific with my sets - blending in & standing out..."

Berni-Rare B-Sides I was chilling out with some friends last Sunday afternoon when me & my buddy decided to crack open a couple of crates, dust off some old classics & spin some of that old wax just for the hell of it. Taking it in turns to try & out do each other.... it wasn't long before we we're straying away from the main mixes & going into obscure B-Side / Remix territory. A lot of fun discovering some old gold, not to mention some REALLY flakey remixes by some now BIG DJ's ; ) I picked my top 10 favourites of the session & decided to make this hour long retro mix with a twist. All tracks are recorded from the original 12" Vinyls which have seen toooooo many parties & most of them are 15-20 plus years old so expect some surface noise especially on the intros which wear down the fastest / get most abuse. Pretty much a straight mix with only a tad of digital f**king with. Great for an after hours trainspotting session or late night groove on ; ) You can hear / download it here...crackles & all.... www.djberni.com Genre's - House (all kinds), Breakbeat (when it was still part of a house track), Other (inspiration for all the others).
