As far as house DJs go, DJ Mickey Calvin is probably one of the industry’s best-kept secrets. It’s no wonder his style is so versatile - he’s played House, Deep House, Underground and Soulful House before one of the toughest crowds to please: Devoted ‘house heads’ in Chicago, IL.
Mickey began DJ-ing while he was still a club kid himself; not really intending on being in front of an audience. He began DJ-ing as a hobby because he loved the music so much. But with influences like his dad – who bought him his first set of “12’s” and the support of his friends, Mickey finally decided it was time to test his skills before a live audience.
Like most DJs in the 80’s and early 90’s, Mickey began to refine his sound by spinning at old school ‘house’ parties and opening in clubs for other House DJs. He’s played alongside some very notable DJ’s, including Craig Loftis, Terry Hunter, Ron Trent, Gene Hunt, Mike Dunn, Ron Carroll, Andre Hatchett, & Anthony Nicholson. It wasn’t long before Mickey was in demand enough to establish his own residency at some of the hottest clubs in Chicago – including the famous “Red Dog” (now closed) on North Avenue. He is also an alumnus of 3 Degrees Global – sharing the 1’s and 2’s with Julius - the ‘Mad Thinker’, DJ Monna, and DJ FLX.
Currently Mickey is working on his “Unity” project: “a social gathering to celebrate the common thread we share through our love of House Music.” He can be heard DJ-ing live on his internet Radio show at www.pressureradio.co.uk, www.jerseydjs.com.
