A BIT ABOUT MISS MINDY
Miss Mindy has always loved music. As a kid, she was often found singing and dancing around the living room to her favourite vinyl. 20 years on and not much has changed.
Admittedly, it’s no longer 80’s pop music that gets her going – this has been replaced by house music - but the effect it seems to have on her is still the same.
Her love for dance music began back in her native home of New Zealand, where she was introduced to UK compilations such as those from Ministry of Sound, Gatecrasher and Cream in the late 1990s. Coming to the UK in 2000, she was eager to experience first-hand the London club scene that she’d heard so much about and soon became a regular clubber.
After a few years in London, Miss Mindy left the UK to travel but her passion for dance music and the London club scene stayed with her. As soon as she returned in 2003, she bought her first set of decks, a handful of vinyl and off she went - teaching herself, armed with only a book on DJing and her favourite dance CDs as a guide.
She soon caught on to the ins-and-outs of the basics of DJing and loved mixing records so much she realised that she wanted this to be more than just a bedroom hobby. It wasn’t long before she and her friends decided it was time to unleash their music on others; first throwing house parties and then hosting nights at small bars around London. Soon, the AltarEgo brand was launched, hosting funky house nights for charity at venues such as Blag Club, Anexo, Copyright and The White House.
A few CDs were made as giveaways and their popularity encouraged her to do a few more which she used as demos, hosting them on clubbing websites. By this stage, her signature style of uplifting, sexy vocal house had developed and she was keen to share this with as many people as possible.
In early 2006, DJ and promoter Jesse James heard her music and invited her to play for his promotion, Connected! He was so impressed by her mixing skills, tune selection and presence behind the decks that he quickly signed her up as resident DJ. She soon became part of the Connected! family and played regularly for them at a number of venues around London, including the legendary Pacha.
She has also graced the decks for a number of other promotions and clubs, including Unique Music, Got2Go, Spy and Somewhere to name a few, playing in Norwich, Reading and Auckland, New Zealand, as well as London, and has always been invited back to play again.
In December 2006, less than a year after gaining her first residency, Miss Mindy won a competition to become Kinky Malinki’s first ever female resident DJ. Playing the kind of kinky-edged music the judges were looking for and engaging the crowd in a way that mesmerised all in attendance, Miss Mindy proved she was worthy of a residency with one of the UK’s leading house promotions.
Inspired by music from producers such as Chris Lake, Mark Knight, Sebastian Leger and Dirty South, Miss Mindy continues to please clubbers and promoters alike with her uplifting, edgy style of house, combined with infectious energy and enthusiasm behind the decks. 2007 looks set to be her biggest year to date, with bookings already confirmed in Auckland, Dubai and Marbella, as well as across the UK.
