  • Bio

Multi-award winning DJ Monkey has been seen by critics and fans alike as "Original. Emotional. Fresh. Provocative. Hip." Alternative Press said their debut, "Another Evolution could be the most important CD of 2004"; and Francisco H. Ciriza -San Diego Union Tribune commented that, "This (DJ Monkey’s Another Evolution) very well may be the most unique, interesting, and best music you’ll hear this year and for some to come." .. Of 3rd World War, Michael Mollura of the Music Connection commented, in his review of that release, "Los Angeles-based spoken-word hip-hop rock act is as eclectic as it is cool and New York street smart. It’s hard to nail this act to any genre and that’s what makes DJ Monkey unique and good." Ernest Stewart, publisher of one of the foremost progressive opinion sites in the world, Issues & Alibis Magazine, remarked that 3rd World War was, "poignant, powerful and political. I liked every song but 6 of them weren't merely good but great." .. Comprised of a large ensemble and a multi-media presentation, founders Joey Alkes and Mick McMains have been the beneficiaries of the talents a number of artists and musicians. Among the many individual stories concerning DJ MONKEY, is the evolution of prominent "gangsta rapper" Jamal "yaboy tiptoe" Cryer’s conscious street words which as a offset to Joey and Mick’s old school poetics suggest the value of the rap form in meaningful progressive music. It also further links rap to the spoken word of the Beatniks and Hard Bop Jazz experimentalist of legend. .. But what makes DJ Monkey truly unique is the ensembles ability to combine so many seemingly divergent elements and cultures into a contemporary radio friendly pop music. There is little doubt that their ability to write catchy chorus melodies with pertinent ideas and hooky wordplays, and their counterpoint instrumental alliterations, makes DJ MONKEY’S music a truly compelling mix for the modern music world. .. Producer: Joey Alkes & Mick McMains Top Cuts: “Hard Times,” “Love Knows No Color” Summary: Los Angeles-based spoken-word hip-hop rock act is as eclectic as it is cool and New York street smart. It’s hard to nail this act to any genre and that’s what makes DJ Monkey unique and good. There’s a little Lou Reed mixed in with some straight-up hard rock choruses. New York-raised vocalist Joey Alkes is like the beatnik poet who feels more comfortable with fuzz-treated guitars behind him than some finger snaps, but the anti-war message still comes through. ––Michael Mollura, Music Connection
