Mr Gee

Woah... (writing this stuff is always difficult!)...Okaaaay.... I started off as a DJ playing mainly Hip Hop and Funk grooves in clubs and bars. I then became interested in Spoken Word and the underground poetry scene in London and for many years I hosted a highly acclaimed Spoken Word entertainment night called "Brix-Tongue" in South London.

This led me onto radio presenting. I've guest-hosted the "London Diaspora Live" show on Resonance radio and I was the main host for the SONY award nominated series "Bespoken Word" on BBC Radio where I've aimed to bring the UK Spoken Word scene to a larger audience. I was the "Poet Laureate" on comedian Russell Brand's hugely popular BBC 6music/Radio 2 program, writing a new poem every week during each show. I sometimes also review the newspapers and speak on current issues for the "Late Show" on Radio London.

As a Spoken Word Poet myself, I have performed all over the UK and abroad: at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, at the Nuyorican Poets cafe in NYC, at the "Black Lily" night in Philly and at the Toronto International Slam Competition in Canada.

I run "creative Writing" worshops in Schools and Colleges within London, where I hope to bring a greater appreciation of words and literacy among the students that I teach.

I've written comedy for TV and monologues for independent film releases and I do voice over work for the Hip Hop and R&B shows on MusFlash TV (Sky +375). I wrote, produced and arranged my own album "Poetry in the Key of Gee" to show the variety of different subject matter that my words cover (and I shamelessly pretended to be really important when I told my friends that I was "busy in the studio!").

"Poetry in the Key of Gee is that rarity, a Spoken Word album that lasts the course. Righteously entertaining and entertainingly righteous":- Straight No Chaser, music magazine.

There....... I think that's about it .....(But knowing me, I've probably forgotten something really important tho')

Hey Gee, these aren't my lyrics, but I feel em and I think you would too... enjoy mate!

Well I heard you crying
Somebody stole my soul.
How could I be dying?
I turned 25, days ago.

[bridge]
We're all
On the ground,
Crying out.
Somebody save me please.
I won't sit aorund just thinking about,
The troubles that tommorrow brings
Yeah

[chorus]
I'm dying to be alive, yeah.
I'm dying to be alive, yeah.
Lets not go through our lives.
I'm just dying to be alive.
Yeah.

The people you've touched,
The way you've touched them
I hope they've touched you too.

'Cause in this life,
It's hard to tell.
What is false and what is true.

[Bridge]

We're all
On the ground,
Just crying out.
Somebody save me please.
I won't sit around just thinking about
The troubles that tommorrow brings

[chorus]
I'm dying to be alive, yeah
Not trying to just survive, yeah.
Lets not go through our lives.
I'm just dying to be alive.
Yeah.

And we all come,
Tumbling down.
No matter how strong,
We all return to the ground
Another day gone,
A day closer to fate.
Soon we'll find it's
A little too late.
Too late.

Na Na Na-na
Na Na Na-na
Na Na Na-na Na
Na Na Na-na
Na Na Na-na
Na Na Na-na na

The things you see,
The way you see them.
Will never been seen again
To go through life,
Livin' on luck.
Betting ten thousand to ten.
Yeah
Mistakes I've made
In this life.
Can't even see why I win.
But the thing that's strange is
You only live once.
And never look back again.

Yeah
I'm dying to be alive, yeah
Not trying to just survive, yeah.
Lets not go through our lives.
I'm just dying to be alive.
Yeah.

Dying to be alive, yeah
Not trying to just survive, yeah.
Let's not go through our lives.
I'm just dying to be alive.
Yeah.

And we all come,
Tumbling down.
No matter how strong,
We all turn to the ground.

Nov 4 2008 2:39 AM

Thanks Gee, that is so well needed at the moment. Is it possible to have that published in any of your mainstream media over there? From what we're reading online down here in Australia, there seems a profound lack of perspective going on in the British media at the moment...

Nov 3 2008 9:53 PM

Apologies is poignant and wonderful, it's sad that there was no proper goodbye, and I'm genuinely gutted with how things have turned out, listening to the podcasts was like being with good friends, I know that sounds ridiculous but it meant more to me than even I realised.

send love to Russell and Matty Morgs and I wish you all the best, you're a genius x
Saffy 'Gallagher' Johnson

Nov 3 2008 9:36 PM

Gee, I personally think you're a genius.
I love the Apologies poem, it just summed up what everyone was thinking.
Hope you're okay =]

brotha, russell was right. If there's ever a time to put out a book of all of your end of show poems from the radio 2 show it's now. that apologies in order could be the last one. i know it'd sell. go for it.
Tristan

Nov 1 2008 11:47 AM

Heya Gee, will you guys be looking at moving to a different station? I can't see why every other radio station wouldn't jump at the chance of having you three talented guys in their lineup

Your latest creation made shivers go up and down my (and hubbys) spine ....so brilliantly written...espec. when you pointed out that UK-soldier body-bag count is being overlooked in order to wonder about the relatively tiny Russell-Ross thing it was (as we say in Canada/paraphrased)...."Gee shoots! He scores!" ~crowd goes wild~

Hey Gee, definately miss your poems on the radio shows mate! But with a talent like yours, why stop at Radio 2? Keep it up buddy!
