DJ MsDD has been a music critic for several newsprint media since 1976! At the Boston Phoenix since 1979, covering first soul and funk, then disco; now DJ gigs and DJ music, chiefly, and also "variete francaise." I do record reviews, interviews, features, and concert reviews...
As a journalist, I was the FIRST to report on disco DJ mixing and am still the ONLY newsprint media journalist who reports on live DJ performances.
DJs who I have interviewed and/or reported on live gigs for include: STEVE LAWLER (last week, on his first-ever visit gig in Boston, I'm told); DAVID MORALES (twice); ROGER SANCHEZ; DANNY TENAGLIA (three times); FRANKIE KNUCKLES (Three times -- latest was last week here at Underbar); JOSH WINK (twice); HONEY DIJON; PAUL VAN DYK; CARL COX (twice); PETER RAUHOFER (twice, including two weeks ago); LITTLE LOUIE VEGA; DARRIN FRIEDMAN; ARMAND VAN HELDEN (three times -- he's from Boston); DJ MANOLO (three times); GRANDMASTER FLASH; SATOSHI TOMIIE; CEVIN FISHER (twice); ERICK MORILLO (twice, including last week); DJ DUBFIRE (of Deep Dish); VICTOR CALDERONE (four times); MIDNIGHT SOCIETY; DERRICK CARTER; LUCA RICCI; CRAIG MITCHELL; TOM STEPHAN (SUPERCHUMBO); FRED EVERYTHING; ERIC ENTRENA (twice); DAVE FROM DALLAS; DJ KEVIN McCREA; KOBBE & AUSTIN LEEDS; JAY PROUTY; DJ ADILSON; Mr. V; DJ PAULO; STEVE PORTER (twice) & CHRIS MICALI; LANCE JORDAN (twice), ROSKO & MARTA C.; CARL CRAIG; JOHN CREAMER & STEPHANE K.; DJ COLETTE; DJ CHUCK LOVE; DJ JONATHAN PETERS; CARLOS FAUVRELLE; PHONIQUE; FELIX DA HOUSECAT; DJ CONNIE CASSEROLE; DJ BORIS; DJ WAYNE MICHAEL; and DJ STRICT.
I have also interviewed ROGER SANCHEZ, JOI CARDWELL, BARBARA TUCKER, and (for Tower PULSE!, where I was the dance-music columnist from 1994 to 1998), GIORGIO MORODER, CRYSTAL WATERS, STEVE PORTER, DJ DEKA, CRAIG MITCHELL, ULTRA NATE, SAEED YOUNAN, ERIC ENTRENA (Barcelona), and (thanks to my colleague), three other Barcelona DJs: GABI NEWMAN, JAVA, and DAVID GAUSA. I've also reviewed countless house, trance & techno CDs (including three of MISS KITTIN's, LIDELL TOWNSELL's NuNu, an EDDIE BAEZ CD, the first C + C MUSIC FACTORY cd, the new MARTIN SOLVEIG 2-CD set, MISS NINE's debut, the new (not yet released) DENNIS FERRER cd, NICK WARREN's PARIS cd, an EDDIE AMADOR, SANDER KLEINENBERG's new 2-CD set, the new LAYO & BUSHWACKA! CD, DJ SULTAN, DJ JUSTIN MARTIN, DJ OSCAR G, 2 MIKE CRUZ CDs, three Steve Lawler's, and four by ROGER SANCHEZ)...
"AFTER HOURS," My major year 2007 feature of the local, Boston-area HOUSE MUSIC SCENE was a full-length cover story at the BOSTON PHOENIX!
.......................................
Also, in 2008 I joined KULT RECORDS -- for quite a while now, a major source of the best in house music -- as their in-house writer. Thanks for the invite, babes! People, take my advice and listen to MsDD: KULT is AWESOMELY HOTTT!!!!! ..... e-mail me at msdd@kult.com
................................
Recently MACHINE BOX RECORDINGS also asked me to write for them -- thanx Tomas, you're a dear!
In 1991 I did a book entitled GUIDE TO THE 800 BEST DISCO TRACKS, which was published as part of the ALL MUSIC GUIDE...
During the 1980s I reported (for the VILLAGE VOICE and BOSTON PHOENIX) on soul music, funk, and the continuing disco scene -- including a long interview with FRANCOIS_K (then at Prelude Records) and articles on TONY CARRASCO, Bobby Orlando, Kano, Change (and Jacques Fred Petrus), Madonna (often), Larry Levan, Italo-disco (including Spagna, Topo & Roby, Alexander Robotnick, and Fun Fun), Hazell Dean (and the UK's hi-NRG scene), Indeep, Shannon, "Miami Beat," my first story on House Music (after learning of it through the Village Voice's CHUCK EDDY, a terrific rock-crit), and Jellybean Benitez (twice)...
back in the 1970s I was a very active music critic. Most memorably, I spent a week on the road with Parliament-Funkadelic covering their entire scene for a now-defunct music mag named GIG; interviewed Grace Jones, Loleatta Holloway, Donna Summer, and Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire (as well as many many others); and was present at Gloria Gaynor's legendary, 1975 "QUEEN OF DISCO" show at Boston's Hotel Bradford.
And now a little story. In 1981 -- I think -- I heard the Jonzun Brothers' new songs at their stuidio in Fort Hill, Roxbury section of Boston. Liked one track especially --- sent it to Tommy Silverman, then just beginning to establish Tommy Boy Records. He liked it -- phoned me at 2 A.M., woke me up, asked me to name it, said he could not call it "Pac Man," the already-taken name that the Jonzuns had given it. I said, "Play it for me again." He played it. I said, "call it 'Pac Jam.'" And so he did. It was a huge hit -- I get the credit; I would have liked the money as well! Stupid me for not demanding a contract first. Oh well, call it "my learning experience.....
At the SOHO WEEKLY NEWS from 1980 to 1982 I wrote a column reporting on the adventures of what we then called "scratch mixing" -- the first DJs to create their own music-sphere. I called my column "Turntable Jazz" -- MY term, I invented it -- because as I saw it, turntable improvisation was no different from jazz improvisation on any instrument; nor was the music produced from these improvisations anything but jazz: the real thing. I still think so. I was brought up on jazz when it was every note a dance music, and a jazz-head I still am.
NOW I enter a NEW PHASE of my MUSIC LIFE: In June of 2008 I started putting together a MUSIC & DISCUSSION WEBCAST courtesy of the Phoenix's internet media division. My co-host will be CARLI CARIOLI, who heads the PHOENIX's internet media sector. He and I have discussed the music that I love for two years and more, and my WEBCAST is the result -- thanks, CARLI!
My webcast -- titled "THE SPHERE," hosted at www.thephoenix.com -- features house music in all its variations; trance and electronica; French variete; Quebec-pop (a passion of mine since the early 1980s), and the music of various "major stars" as listed in my "favorites" box seen to the lower left of this profile. Our theme is RHYTHM, RAVE & ROMANCE. Not a bad formula for a tranny's life, is it? Nor for anyone's!
Yes,I am a transvestite, and I love being me. I get to wear fabulous clothes and the highest heels and to look super sexy!
I enjoy being SEXY-HOT! A sexy-hot tranny, no less. Yes. So... If my life as a TRANSVESTITE is of particular interest to you, I maintain a photo page at MSDEEDEEDJ at FLICKR with an ongoing commentary, photo by photo, iin which I discuss transvestite issues (and some house-music stuff too). The page is accessible under my Yahoo handle "msdeedeedj." By all means surf this site, love my photos, read the captions, and comment... Being a transvestite means that, yes, I am a boy ewho dreses as a girl almodst all the time sand has embraced that she is indeed ALL WOMAN. I am thrilled by my femalenes and wouldnt change a thing! I am living about 2/3 of my life as the female I am, and I feel blesed and lucky to be so gorgeously, sexualluy female!
There, I've said it. I hope you are thrilled to be invited to share this deep, sensual insight into the beautiful, stylish, loving gal that I am.
Yes I am a very proud member of PINK Essence, a social network for transgendered gals of all degrees, where we can all unite and be as one. To find out more about PINK Essence, why not visit our website ?
