Native Californian DJ OSCAR DA GROUCH touched his first set of decks in 1988 at the age of 15. Mixing, scratching and obsessively collecting vinyl records, he began his career djing weddings and backyard parties. It was during late nights and early mornings in early 1990 that he slept with headphones on, religiously taking notes on all the electronic music he liked and heard on a techno show playing on station KXLU. That same year, Oscar attended his first rave with performances by 808 State and Bjork. By 1991, Oscar was professionally dj'ing L.A.'s mega rave scene playing techno, breakbeat and jungle music. Early rave and weeklys he played at or was a resident of were: JUNGLE (LA's 1st jungle club in 1993), WHAT?, NoDoz, DARE, Angie's Blunt, Insomniac, Family, Opium and an endless list of 100s of one-off events. He was also part of a live techno performance group called Axis Worklabs, who played in front of crowds on analog synth and drum machines. Members of that group included DJ Fester and DJ SoulCat. He was one of three Los Angeles dj's to first spin jungle music and is one of the founding members of the original Los Angeles based dj crew “The Junglist Platoon. His djing has taken him to various states and locations across the US and he is currently a resident dj at Los Angeles' weekly club RESPECT. RESPECT is one of the longest running Drum 'n Bass clubs started and still run by Junglist Platoon Members: DJs Machete, Scooba, Clutch, NoFace, Sense, Justin and Drone.
Oscar's voyage into music production began when he first started djing. To get bookings he made mixtapes using two tape decks, turntables and a 4-track recorder. Then to sequence tracks, he got into midi music production. A few pieces he purchased were: a SP1200 drum machine, an MPC60 drum machine, Roland: SH101, SH202, SH303 and SH909, numerous keyboards, rackmounts, and a Nord Lead just to name a few pieces of many, many, many.... Today, Oscar no longer uses hardware to create tracks but only his Apple Powerbook laptop, Logic Pro and virtual synth plugins and ProTools.
In 1995, Oscar co-created and released numerous jungle and breakbeat LPs under the label Turnstyle Records. In 1998, Turnstyle Records evolved into Turnstyle Records, Inc. solely focusing on the service of vinyl record and audio mastering. Presently, Turnstyle Records, Inc. masters vinyl records and cuts dubplates for talent from various genres of music from across the United States and overseas.
Visit the Turnstyle Records, Inc. website for more information on how to get your tracks cut to dubplate or for vinyl record mastering/replication: www.turnstylerecords.com
Oscar was professionally trained in music engineering at the University of California Los Angeles. Along with the production of his own beats and reggae ridims, he finds time for collaborations with producers, mixing different styles of music. He has extensive knowledge and experience with analog (still has a 24 track, 2" tape machine) and digital hardware/software. An Apple certified Logic Pro Audio user, he is efficient in Digidesign's ProTools along with other DAW music-making tools. He is an avid analog synth collector who still has an original Roland TB-303 encased in a plexi-glass display.
