Rest In Peace 'Uncle Mel' Cheren ~ Thank You For The Music!
Some would say 'revolutionary' artist, DJ, producer, designer, father, brother, lover, friend.My experience comes from since the early 80's notably connected with the late pop artist Keith Haring who I became close friends with while attending the School of Visual Arts in NYC. In '82, I assisted Keith in doing an installation at the legendary Paradise Garage nightclub. In '85, I was involved in distributing the famous ‘Free South Africa’ posters in Central Park NYC and in '86 helped open Keiths POP SHOP Store. I had the fortunate opportunity to DJ for Keith’s ‘Party of Life’ in the Michael Todd Room at the Palladium nightclub in NYC. It was Keith Haring that introduced me to the legendary DJ Larry Levan and scores of other prominent artists. It was also Keith & Larry that perhaps influenced me to a deep passion today - mixing art, music & technology.
Through the 90's into 2000, I worked as the Art Director/Resident DJ for the longest running soulful house nightclub ~ The Shelter at 6 Hubert Street in NYC. Contributing to a vibe that one would describe as a "Spiritual Journey" taking place each and every Saturday night. Throughout this time, I have been blessed to have worked with a veritable list of "who's who" in the music industry including Patti Labelle, Grace Jones, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Isaac Hayes, Kool & The Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, Mary J. Blige, Femi Kuti, Christina Aguilera, Blaze, MAW and many others.
I'm currently working on new projects, new music, several monthly parties and other cool productions. Perhaps someday something with you... DON'T FORGET THAT ON THE FIRST SATURDAY OF EACH AND EVERY MONTH IS ESCUELA... Next Party is on Saturday April 4th 2009
