DJ RHUDE Biography
The DJing bug first infected a young" RHUDE" while staying up late nights in the confines of his bedroom, recording all the weekend mix shows. The Brooklyn bred youngster always exhibited a fascination with DJs like Marley Marl, Red Alert and DJ Premier and it was through his burning desire to emulate them that he purchased some DJing equipment and was soon supplying his hood with his homemade tapes. It wasn’t until a friend suggested that he try to sell his mixes through record stores that DJ Rhude was born and he began blazing his path to the top.
Brooklyn’s world famous Beat Street records, was the young DJ’s first foray into the heavily populated mix tape arena and where he enjoyed his first sales on a broader scale. This led to other stores wanting to carry his tapes and some of the biggest internet sites like Mixunit,com now carry his product. Always priding himself on staying two steps ahead of the competition, his theme heavy tapes were noted for exclusive music, artist interviews and skillful mixing. “A lot of deejays have gotten lazy when putting together their mix tapes, explains Rhude, but I try to give people the new shit, and be creative at the same time.” It’s this dedication to the art and his ambitious nature that led to him branching off into other divisions of hip hop.
In 1997, Rhude and three other friends garnered a spot on 105.9 FM, a station that was renowned for it’s underground rap shows (Awesome Two, Hank Love, Marley Marl to name a few), and continued
the tradition of delivering after hours underground hip hop at it’s best. Under the moniker Nocturnal Transmissions, the crew was responsible for one of the station’s hottest shows that featured new and old music, as well as a plethora of guest artists stopping by. It was here where he honed his radio skills and became noticed by his peers. In addition, he hooked up with a then fledgling rap magazine called XXL to pen their singles column which was dubbed Spin Cycle (recently changed to Block Music). XXL has since grown to become the top selling hip hop magazine around and Rhude grew right along with them as his duties expanded to include writing album reviews, artist features and his ever constant singles column. Rhude continues to be an integral part of the XXL staff as his ideas and vision help keep the magazine 3 steps ahead of the competition.
The young entrepreneur also produced one of the hottest and most requested songs of 1999, the answer record “No Pigeons.” “When I first heard TLC’s “No Scrubs” I immediately knew I had to get a mc to record an answer to it,” reflects Rhude. The rapper in question turned out to be Queens’ own Mr. Woods, and together they recorded the mix tape exclusive “No Vultures.” The song quickly gained popularity on the street and soon Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex got wind of it. “Flex loved the concept and he suggested to me that we collaborate with the Sporty Thievz and that’s how “No Pigeons” was born,” says Rhude. Soon after, DJ Rhude was offered to make an appearance on BET’s Rap City. Three million viewers got an opportunity to witness his DJing skills first hand, as he held it down for three shows with the host, Big Tigger. He has since made two more appearances on the show, each time demonstrating why he’s fast becoming one of the most respected DJs in the game. Possessing a combination of acute street sense and businessman savvy, it’s assured that his ascent to the top will be a swift one.
