DJ R-Monix has a wide range of musical tastes and influences and this is represented through his Drum n Bass productions.
He also learnt music theory at primary school, and since giving up the violin at 11 decided to start playing the guitar and has continued playing for the last 20 years.
I use to have this in 1st person then I changed it to 3rd person. Why I don't know!
DJ R-Monix was introduced to music at the age of 8 when he played Violin in the school orchestra in 1983. In 1987 he was listening to the likes of Duran Duran, INXS and general pop music of the time, when in 1991 he was introduced to Australian rockers AC/DC who he describes as his favorite band of all time. This was when his passion for music started and for the next couple of years was listening to the DCs, Metallica, Slayer etc. Then about 1994/1995, drinking beer with his mates he used to listen to radio 1's 'One in The Jungle' show. He was blown away by the deep throbbing bass lines and syncopated drum beats but unfortunately at the time there wasn't a big Jungle scene in Northern Ireland so this remained a weekly affair. From then until about 2000 it was a steady mixture of metal,hip-hop,trance/techno.
Then his younger brother brought a Roland 505 home one day and he decided to knock a few beats out, Drum n Bass being the preferred choice and around the same time big name Drum n Bass DJs started playing in clubs in Belfast, notably Shine.
He resumed listening to Fabio n Grooveriders drum n bass show and was really feeling the maturity and progression of modern drum n bass with its wide range of styles and moods.
So in 2004 he decided to buy a PC and recreate some of the songs he'd created on the 505 and also took an interest in Djing when his housemate at the time brought home a set of technics and after a year or so started DJing with two of his friends who were already experienced hip-hop/drum n bass DJs, DJ Converter and DJ Koncept who were known as the Northern Alliance and provided an alternative nightlife in their home town.
He has achieved his short-term goal by getting a radio play on Fabio n Grooveriders drum n bass show in Nov 2007, and is presently working on more tunes.
Watch this space.
He also thinks Evangeline Lilly is just mmm perfect!
