DJ Schim’s career began in the late 90’s by watching local DJs spin at various events and parties in Chicagoland. He was always a loyal fan of dance music, watching its every trend and movement. Soon, without having any knowledge about mixing music, he decided to invest in a mixer, a pair of turntables, and cd decks. “Everyone thought I was crazy for devoting so much time, money, and effort on something that I had no idea about,” he recalls. But hard work paid off.
At first, he spent countless days and nights learning and practicing basic DJ skills.
“Every night, I’d go to a nightclub and listen to other DJ sets, watching them spin. Further, I’d listen to live sets by some of the biggest names in DJ industry such as Paul Van Dyk and Paul Oakenfold to look at their techniques and musical styles,” he says. Later, he got a chance to practice his skills at a local nightclub. After a while, more and more people had an opportunity to see him spin and regular bookings started to come in. It didn’t take long time before he landed weekly residencies in every major European nightclub in Chicagoland. As a DJ playing long sets for quite diverse crowds, he had a chance to develop his skills in many genres of club music such as house, trance, and even hip-hop! This ability has additionally landed him appearances in various downtown venues such as Vision, Rive Gauche, Chromium, and more.
Throughout the years, DJ Schim released dozen successful mix-cd compilations to promote what was being played in European clubs at the time. “It was an opportunity to get your name out there...,” he notes. He has also compiled and mixed projects for other producers in the dance music scene. In 2002, DJ Schim made his FM radio debut on Chicago’s Energy 92.7&5 spinning every Wednesday night during their live broadcasts.
In 2008, after a year long break from continuous club residencies, DJ Schim decided to focus his energy on his own music production & remixing. “It’s interesting how dance music has evolved over the years and how different genres keep on influencing each other. I definitely want to diversify my productions and experiment with a variety of sounds.” he says.
