DJ SEOUL aka HOMEBOY! (Direct Drive, NYC) – Biography
A major force in the Stateside drum’n’bass scene, Brooklyn based DJ Seoul has achieved to become a staple in the dance community at large. He grew up on Punk and Hardcore music, avidly Sk8boarded since 11 years old and eventually started getting into hip-hop thanks to Public Enemy's debut album. He loved all forms of music until hearing cassette tapes given to him by good friend Riccardo with the then new sound coming from UK's breakbeat scene. When a DJ Randall tape kept him up all night, he was bitten with inspiration to purchase a Turntable and pursue this form of music back in 1993.
After making his debut behind the decks at some dodgy venue in the Village he started to play at Liquid Sky the store and its party called Bandit at the 12th Street Lounge. Jens Rocker and Elhadj suggested making tapes to sell at the shop and was amazed when 20 tapes had sold within a week. After many tape sales Seoul felt it was time to keep pursuing a DJing career.
He DJ'd at New York events as well as at raves and underground parties nationwide. Before long, he found himself deeply entrenched in the world of Jungle Drum & Bass, collaborating and befriending such greats as DJ Zinc, A-Sides, Randall, MC Foxy, MC Fats and others.
Rumble Sessions was the first major weeklies he had worked on for 2 years with then partner DJ Lion. They brought in many special guests including Pug Wash, Krust and more as well as giving local DJs an opportunity to play. Afterwards, Seoul decided the time was right to start his own event with resident DJs Lion, Cassien, DJ Seen, Chris Thomas, Doomer, Carol C, Reid Speed, TC Izlam & MC Posi-D.
While constantly driving back and forth from the city to his home in Jerzy he came up with the name Direct Drive because each commute was going directly to a point of destination. Sensing the need for a weekend Jungle Drum & Bass night, Seoul began a weekly Saturday night event in 1998 at a small venue called Baktun. Rapidly becoming NYC's top night, installing a custom sound system considered one of NY's best (thanks to Artur L), international recognition, overcoming the Cabaret Laws until eventually the closing of the venue 4.5 years later made DJ Seoul and his brand Direct Drive stands as a symbol of Dedication, Loyalty & Perseverance.
Direct Drive has since produced a tremendous amount of events and brought over 3000 people to its Jungle Warfare event at the beginning of 2006 and continued to bring out massive amounts of people to this event and continues to push the envelope.
Currently, Seoul is focusing his energy on producing more diverse events, Dub War - NYC's premiere Dub Step party and record label and Mic Wreck - underground hip hop label featuring new blood alongside legends in the game. He has been featured in Knowledge Magazine, XLR8R, Time Out, Village Voice and many more...
