DJ SHAD BIOGRAPHY
DJ Shad is unsatisfied. Unsatisfied with the state of hip hop as a whole, with the way his state is being represented and most importantly the way his city is represented in the grand scheme of this genre. “I think it’s unfortunate for us the way the South is portrayed, but moreso with Texas, all that’s expected out of our music is candy paint and syrup.” But what do you do when the music you enjoy isn’t being created? DJ Shad takes matters into his own hands. “Instead of complaining, I figured I’d try my hand at producing. If I couldn’t do that, then I’d go try complaining. I guess I was pretty good at it.”
DJ Shad, along side B.Hardy, founded Hi-Rollaz Entertainment in 2004. Having already created a buzz from his slow jam mix CD’s in high school, the trend continued where they met up at Southern University in Baton Rouge. “I knew of Hardy through some mutual friends, so we finally clicked up on campus at college,” he recalls. “They told me he could rap, and of course I was skeptical. But when I actually heard him spit, I was impressed.” After some coaxing, Shad eventually convinced the aspiring MC to continue honing his craft.
After recruiting more of the hottest unheard talent from their home town, 2 Scoop, B-Don and Rob DeVine, the newly formed label immediately began work on DJ Shad’s debut project “Red Kool-Aid: The Album”. “I chose that name because I wanted the album to sound like a mixture,” he explains. “A mixture of a lot of styles and influences of different music all blended together that please your ear. And ask anybody from the hood what their favorite Kool-Aid is, and guess what answer you’ll get.” “Red,” I coyly respond. “That’s right!” he exclaims. “So this album is basically—literally an audio version of red Kool-Aid. Just any of them flavors that’s red, thrown all together with a bunch of sugar and water. And I’ll bet the streets love it just as much as that damn drink!” he jokes.
Sounds like a wager the city of Dallas and the state of Texas is ready to take as well.
