MY show on choice ran for a couple of years in the mid 1990's if i remember right, friday's and saturday's 9pm till 10pm,it was an opportunity that i grabbed with both hands once i got the call,it was a chance to obviously promote myself further, expose new material, but also spread the drum and bass sound to those who had not encounted or embraced it yet,
I had a plan to take myself and drum'n' bass to new level's ..
The show, entitled " Jungle pressure" had a huge response from all corners of the midland's and was one of the first legal, jungle/drum and bass specialist shows of it's kind in the area.
I never really did enough on the music production side ,as i much prefered being behind the deck's,i built my name playing out in and around the midlands (England),and basically being a positive influence within the scene, but here's couple of 12's i did in 95... Big thanks to: Ellis the menace( A true mixmaster), musart studio (Birmingham,England),bizzy b (brain studio,London,England),jason (b2b)+ percy (big city records).. copy and paste into your web browser:
FRIENDS REQUESTS..Sometimes i can take a while accepting friend request's, as i try to read up on those that are sent to me.
P.s. A BIG thank you to U!, for checkin' my page, the messages of good will, and comments about the mixes(I'm doing my best to get back to everyone, bare with us),thanks for your views.. means a lot,and that's comin' from the heart.. Peace..
In October 1990 Coventry made dance music history...
That first Saturday night/Sunday morning experience was put on at the former Granada Bingo Hall in Lower Ford Street,Coventry,England.
The bingo hall had now been transformed into a 4 floored nightclub, and was also voted the best nightclub in the country in 1991 by fellow ravers through DJ Magazine. With a chill out space including a cinema on the ground floor, a second floor room enough to hold 500 people, and the main room on the top floor holding over a 1000 people including the balcony.
Every Friday and Saturday night would be filled by clubber's and raver's from all over Britain..
Act's such as :The Prodigy, K Klass, SL2, Altern 8, Moby, Shades of Rhythm and LFO all passed through it's door's with live p.a. set's.
Top dj's such as, The great grooverider, carl cox, sasha, frankie bones,Micky finn, top buzz etc,all graced the decks on a reguar basis, and two hour set's were the norm.
February 94,the club was closed.
At the time of closing more than one million people had passed through its doors and it had a standing membership of 74,000. .
Coming from a musical family, with both his father and sister being dj's it was only natural progression for him to start playing as well.
Their was always music playing in the house, all sort's of style's from reggae to disco, soul to pop ...i grew up hearing all sort's,my whole family love's music , it's in our blood..
My dad had a mobile disco and played out most weekends,he had decks in the house, and he was always flicking through his collection, and doing his homework in mags to find out the lastest releases, marking off the record's he had to buy.
At some stage he ask me to help move the gear around of a weekend for a bit of pocket money, and i often tagged along when he went to buy his records.
I began to show more and more interest and learned a lot, watching and listening to him dj , using the mike at the right times to keep the crowd happy...(Which all came in very handy with a stint on radio and mcing further down the line),
I'd sit and watch the dancefloor, and select records for him to put on next, and put the last one back in it's sleeve..learning lot's about artist's,label's and title's along the way,
To cut a long story short ,i would take to the decks for an hour or so to give him a break and built my confidence up to play for longer..
At a young age i feel this was the foundation,in my musical education.
In 1987 when the sound of House was coming over from Chicago with the likes of Raze, Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley and Marshall Jefferson etc.., Shock C took an exceptional liking to the tempo and style of it.
As far as the the birth of house, what can i say that has,nt already been said,my music tastes roam across the boarders of dance, and further,it's important to me to keep an open mind..good music is good music..whatever the style yeah?..but it gotta have that x-factor,that bounce, that gets butt's off seats and the dancefloor movin'!..it's all about creatin' that energy, that vibe, where as many people as possible are on that parallel level of togetherness, whether it be 10 bodies or 10,000..
Shock C tells me his early influences in the scene came from the likes of Grooverider , Fabio and Carl Cox, which Shock C has a great deal of respect for. Clearly because they have worked hard and have been on the scene from the beginning. His first break in the DJ’ing door came from Man Parris (which he thanks to this day) at the Tally Ho pub and Reflections nightclub in Coventry. In those days he was playing a mixture of early House, Hip Hop, Acid and Funk, and it wasn’t until the Eclipse opened in Coventry, that Shock C got the biggest break of his career.
“I managed to get my foot in the door a couple of months after it had opened thanks to Stu and Baz (then owners).
Getting into a club of that capacity, and at that moment in time, I was over the moon. That club was one of the first all night clubs that set the pace”.
Well, once Shock C managed to establish a name for himself at one of Britain’s biggest all night rave clubs, work started to come in. It was at this stage that he decided to give up his daytime job as a trainee mechanic. Working all night DJ’ing and then rolling into a garage to work Saturday morning was beginning to affect his health, (not to mention the punters motors!!). Well, when The Edge (formerly The Eclipse) finally closed its doors in Coventry, Shock C had already started to spread his wings and play at various venues around the country, and abroad. Some promoters had approached him to play at their events whilst others he had approached. As with different venues, so the music began to differ, so it all depended where and who he was playing for.
I am lucky enough to have played and mc'ed along-side some the best in the business, venue's big and small, watched and learned so much...
many can learn to mix..but to get that special gift of being able to select right, work the crowd and take them on a journey is something very unique, something that is nutured over time and experience's...
..I have new ambitions for 2009...As my good friend joe said, "it's just about finding that balance"
And balancing my family time and music is very important to me..
i have a more mature and relaxed attitude to what i want to happen in my life musically, and feel that things should progress naturally, and only to be involved in event's and projects i deem benefical and positive to the scene, and feel i can add something good to what is already there.
old skool with new skool flava,..Connection with the crowd has always been my goal,
to leave the punters with a good memory for the journey home and hopefully... longer ..
Between the year's of 1992 and 1996 i managed the basement section of don christies record's in Birmingham.
With the help of fellow dj, ellis the menace,we built up a good place to get your vinyl and catch up with what was happenin' in the scene ..
Ellis was a true friend, and was a real asset to don's,he always made the time to cover for me when i needed time off to cut plates or to make use of studio time..
The basement specialized in jungle, drum'n' bass, happy hardcore, hardstep, house, garage, import's and techno.
We housed a large selection of tapes, merchandise and tickets for various events around the country.
It was a special place, and a hive of musical activity, and people from all over the uk passed through it's door's during it's time,It was a team effort for sure, and all the staff did their best to keep the music following public up to date with the latest releases and forthcoming events etc..A big thank you to all who contributed into makin' the place what it was,and i feel privileged to have been a part of that ...
Don christies was a important hub for the midlands scene, and an ideal basecamp to gather feedback from events,to access the music and meet new people etc..
To all the former customers that have been in touch..Respects..
