360 Sounds, a salad bowl where music and culture of “360? kinds get mixed up
For the last few years, a tons of clubs and subsequent ‘party culture’ in Korea have opened places wide for many young bloods to enjoy music and dancing radiating explosive
energy and youthful spirit. It is undeniable that those “party/club culture” based on music or further on general culture, have been formulating subculture to some extent. In
other words, it is the “party/club culture” that create and assemble various culture codes - from DJing culture and music to design and fashion.
Numerous party moves have tried to create links between different culture codes putting music, videos and other performances all together. However, they didn’t put much efforts
to music, the core element of a party and didn’t care about DJs, who make a party a party, handling music. Taking in account that DJing scene wasn’t mature enough back then, DJs
are still regarded as mere passive assistants at partys and clubs in Korea, nothing different from a ‘jukebox.’
360 Sounds Of the DJs, By the DJs, but For the People
360 Sounds took off with 3 Seoul-based DJs, DJ Soulscape, DJ Jinmoo, DJ Plastic Kid and now they’re hosting parties with 2 more DJs and 2 MCs -DJ Smood, DJ YTst , Make-1 and
Superman IVY. It is notable that 360 Sounds is planned, promoted and executed by DJs themselves. That is, 360 Sounds is a music oriented movement by DJs. Many other DJs out there
offer people ’services’ of playing same old tunes to which people are already accustomed so that they can have fun at ease (and that still is a part of being a good DJ).
However, DJs are the protagonists with absolute power in 360 Sounds. DJs at 360 Sounds don’t drop some music just because this is on a Billboard chart and that is well-known and
sounds familiar. It is the goal of 360 Sounds that each DJ with different characters supplies fresh music of their own repertoire with diversity even it might be a little strange
for somebody. Because they believe listening fresh music alerts creative spirits and makes our soul sound and vibrant just like having fresh vegetable sustains us healthy.
360 Sounds, the crossroad of diverse culture codes
Like convergences of technologies in the ubiquitous era of these days, the gaps have been closing between realms of culture. Members of 360 Sounds put their best endeavours to
provide a public square for artists from different arenas. Perhaps the most important aspect of 360 Sounds is to bridge the creators and the consumers of urban culture such as
photography, graphic design, installation, graffiti, b-boying, skateboarding and let them share ideas. Of course, there are music and DJs at the center of the movement still and
all.
If a single artist represents 'The Sound Of Seoul', it is DJ Soulscape
A vinyl archeologist who excavates rare, indigenous beats, he delivers a groovy bi-bim-bop mix of old school Korean rock, soul, disco, and boogaloo served sizzling hot in a
funky, fresh hip-hop style. A favorite among clubbers and critics alike, DJ Soulscape has been nominated as the Crossover Artist of the Year at the Korea Music Awards (2003) and
honored as the creative genius behind one of the top 100 K-Pop Albums of the 20th Century (2008). In between his gigs as a producer and performer, he also moonlights as one of
Seoul's top party promoters, music columnists, and radio show hosts. (INTERNATIONAL WEBSITE : www.djsoulscape.kr)
What neighborhood/city do you closely identify with? What makes your community so unique?
Seoul, Korea! More specifically 360 sounds: an eclectic collective of local DJs and artists. Since the subculture scene here is pretty small and packed, we’ve all grown up
together in this nascent movement as skaters, DJs, emcees, designers and hustler creatively influencing each other. It’s a pretty unique experience to have all the b-boys,
stakers, hiphop kids and graffiti artists, photographers partying in one place.
What’s the greatest item that you’ve dug up a local garage/estate sale? How much did it cost?
I recently, copped an extra copy of Port Authority record last week at Myung-dong street [an exclusive fashion haven in Seoul, known by some as the "Mecca of Fashion" or the
"Young People's Street"]. The record only cost me 1,000 won (approximately 1 USD).
If you could interview one unsung hero, who would it be? Why?
It would have to be Sang-Woo Kim, who is responsible for the Saucerman Records and is the mysterious record don. Alongside the fact that he had influenced the greatest hip-hop
producers, he also has the deepest knowledge and vision for modern Afro-American music in Korea. It’s so fantastic for me listening to him worked with Weldon Irvine, Keni
Burke, among others.
