They say Los Angeles is a big city but it may not be big enough for earth-shaking beats and grooves of DJ Special Blend.
Special Blend, a.k.a. DJSB a.k.a. Rooster Cogburn, a native of Springfield, MA, arrived in sunny Los Angeles, California in September 2008, a couple years after earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in Boston. His studies afford him something most DJ’s can never boast of: an experienced club DJ with a classic, educational background.
SB’s mix of Rock and Hip-Hop harkens back to the days of Run-DMC while simultaneously revolutionizing and updating that old-school sound and style. “I'm a black dude who loves hard rock,” he explains of his style. “And I'm also a turntablist DJ.” This style is stamped all over his debut album Black Skater 2.0.
For years, he cut his chops on the turntables at clubs and events all over Boston and across the East Coast. He’s competed in DMC competitions and won top 10 in Boston in 2004. His skills behind the decks also graced the walls of various venues and shows as the opening act for artists such as Lupe Fiasco, Z-Trip, Blackalicious, Wu-Tang Clan and many others. He also toured with MC Moe Pope and the two rocked it daily on East Coast leg of The Warped Tour and South By Southwest in Austin, TX this past year.
When not spinning solo, SB spins as a member of Audible Mainframe, a hip hop band with heavy rock influences. The group relocated to Long Beach, CA from Boston two years ago and found SB to be a perfect complement and addition to their sound.
When not DJing at a particular event, you can probably find DJSB teaching his craft to the youth in an after school program. “I love teaching something that I love to do. Most kids don’t get to DJ at all let alone at school. It makes me feel good that they want to learn and I’m more than happy to show them the ropes.”
DJ Special Blend is currently working the next Black Skater album as well as a new project as Rooster Cogburn.
