PHANTOMSMASHER:IPECAC'S LATEST SMASH.
From the opening track of Phantomsmasher's eponymously titled CD on Mike Pattons(Faith no more/Fantomas) Ipecac label,one gets a good idea of what to expect. "Bishop Hopping", as that first track is called, is a strange and fascinating mixture of melodic guitar play, mechanical and organic drums crashing, otherworldly vocals and electronic fuzz all sifted through what sounds like the Devil's own lap top. The rest of the album follows suit.
Phantomsmasher is the brain child of James Plotkin, a sort of mad scientist of the avant music world. His work has taken the form of many bands and he is a peer of some of the finest (and fiercest) musicians around. Most recently, they were known as Atomsmasher(Hydrahead Recs)-- a more direct noise project in the fully blown Japanese tradition. The noise now being flushed out with some free jazz and aggressive electronica, Phantomsmasher has arrived now when WE NEED them most. The group consists of Plotkin, drummer Dave Witte and "audiomulch vocals" by Speedranch. The output is a beautiful piece of dada that is nothing short of exciting.
Venturing into odd places where only the brave dare, Phantomsmasher could be the savior of art rock, free jazz, avant, electronica, noise, or whatever goddamn label one wishes to slap on. Each track flows beautifully, shifting from chaos to lyricism and back. Several moments begin smoothly, fooling the ear, and then immediately turn harsh and brutal, taking the listener on a bizarre ride through sonic waves that as pleasing as they are challenging. This is as interesting as music gets.
Something this odd and equally enjoyable comes around very very rarely. Phantomsmasher deserves your attention. Vince Coletta

Digitally manipulated sonic chaos. That’s the only way to describe this trio that features the talents of experimental guitarist, bassist James Plotkin ex-Scorn,OLD, ex-Discordance Axis, Burnt by the sun, melt banana drummer Dave Witte, and vocalist $peedranch of Venetian Snares collaborations. This is grind/punk/noise/intensity of the most experimental and superior variety. But the immaculate precision used to assemble and arrange the tracks creates a tumultuous mix that is the musical equivalent of surrealistic art.( Plotkin along with Dave Witte and $peedranch ) is nothing short of what the soundtrack to World War III would be if the composers had never worked in any field other than video games. The track titles are also very 'apt.' Imagine Ministry, Aphex Twin,Boredoms,Mike patton and the Butthole Surfers, meeting at Robert Williams’ place to record some stuff while on massive quantities of acid. You haven’t heard ANYTHING AT ALL like this. Trust me.

Blurring the lines between grindcore, experimental noise, and in-your-face electronica, James Plotkin's Atomsmasher's debut comes off like a cross between Atari Teenage Riot, Merzbow, Aphex Twin, Fantômas, and Torture Garden-era Naked City. In other words, it's wild, it's noisy, it's jarring, and it will leave most listeners either very happy or very annoyed. Vocalist DJ Speedranch proves himself to be an obnoxious screamer par excellence on the level of Mr. Bungle's Mike Patton or the Boredoms' Yamatsuka Eye, although, in truth, his voice is often digitally processed and distorted beyond the point of recognition. The same goes for Dave Witte's drumming; his effects-treated percussion frequently sounds more like the work of an abused drum machine. Together with James Plotkin's kaleidoscopic guitar-synth playing (he also plays bass), it can be hard to tell who is doing what -- the array of digital skipping noises, crunchy static sounds, distortion blasts, and other miscellaneous debris is not what you'd typically expect from a guitar/bass/drum/vocals lineup. It isn't all noise and aggression, though, as there are several moments of spacy, guitar-generated ambience scattered amidst the chaos. There is also a welcome sense of humor present: listen to how they juxtapose a goofy children's song with an especially grating Speedranch yelp at the end of "Placebo". ISIS-Remix and interpretations:
Isis has gotten better and better and better with each release since the Red Sea. But as their work has become more polished, it has also become less challenging. I like a challenge, and I like this album precisely BECAUSE it took me 20 listens to see anything in it but static and feedback and screaming. It IS alienating and I appreciate that - it keeps out the riff-raff. The difficulty of this material makes its ultimate enjoyment all the sweeter.
And like it or not, this sort of experimentation is what Isis has always been about. As catchy as Oceanic may seem, it was pretty damn risky to crossbreed Tangerine Dream and Napalm Death. This compilation takes similarly huge risks, and they don't all pay off, but its a worthwhile journey and a great introduction to a bunch of acts I would otherwise never have heard of. The Tim Hecker and Venetian Snares tracks stand out, and I replay the Speedranch remix compulsively.
Admittedly, this is not very much like Isis. The raw material is mostly (like 66%) taken from (the raw session recordings of) Oceanic, but the end product bears as much resemblance to it as...say...the Charleton Heston version of Planet of the Apes does to the Tim Burton's remake.

This is a reissue of some early five-inch they released. I'm not even sure why they're reissuing this. This is not peak AN; they totally got better as time passed. The remix CD that comes with it doesn't make sense either, because only the DJ Speedranch and Justin Broadrick remixes are any good. In fact, the Merzbow remix is terrible, proving my current thesis that Merzbow is old and boring now and people who go to see him in concert and shit are fooling the fuck out of themselves.

Mijn Mening
Phantomsmasher is één van de vele muzikale projecten van James Plotkin. Samen met drummer Dave Witte en vocalist Speedranch laat hij zich helemaal los op dit album. Het resultaat is een vreemde combinatie van "intelligente" grindcore en electronica. Ondanks de chaos die in de nummers vaak overheerst, zit er wel degelijk structuur in, hoewel die misschien pas na een paar luisterbeurten duidelijk wordt.
Het totaalplaatje lijkt misschien nog het meest op een electronische versie van de hardere nummers van de band Naked City. De vocals (die hier overigens niet zo'n grote rol spelen als in de meeste bands) van DJ Speedranch zijn dan ook niet eens zo anders dan die van Naked City's Yamatsuka Eye, de vocals van Speedranch zijn echter vervormd met behulp van de computer.
Wat de cd zeker ten goede komt is dat er ook rustige momenten zijn. Ook is er plaats voor een beetje humor; tijdens het luisteren kom je zelfs het Teletubbies theme tegen.
Al met al is dit gewoon een erg sterke cd, hoewel het zeker niet geschikt is voor iedereen, vooral doordat het nou niet bepaald de meest toegankelijke cd is. Beoordeling

PHANTOMSMASHER:IPECAC'S LATEST SMASH.
From the opening track of Phantomsmasher's eponymously titled CD on Mike Pattons(Faith no more/Fantomas) Ipecac label,one gets a good idea of what to expect. "Bishop Hopping", as that first track is called, is a strange and fascinating mixture of melodic guitar play, mechanical and organic drums crashing, otherworldly vocals and electronic fuzz all sifted through what sounds like the Devil's own lap top. The rest of the album follows suit.
Phantomsmasher is the brain child of James Plotkin, a sort of mad scientist of the avant music world. His work has taken the form of many bands and he is a peer of some of the finest (and fiercest) musicians around. Most recently, they were known as Atomsmasher(Hydrahead Recs)-- a more direct noise project in the fully blown Japanese tradition. The noise now being flushed out with some free jazz and aggressive electronica, Phantomsmasher has arrived now when WE NEED them most. The group consists of Plotkin, drummer Dave Witte and "audiomulch vocals" by Speedranch. The output is a beautiful piece of dada that is nothing short of exciting.
Venturing into odd places where only the brave dare, Phantomsmasher could be the savior of art rock, free jazz, avant, electronica, noise, or whatever goddamn label one wishes to slap on. Each track flows beautifully, shifting from chaos to lyricism and back. Several moments begin smoothly, fooling the ear, and then immediately turn harsh and brutal, taking the listener on a bizarre ride through sonic waves that as pleasing as they are challenging. This is as interesting as music gets.
Something this odd and equally enjoyable comes around very very rarely. Phantomsmasher deserves your attention. Vince Coletta

Digitally manipulated sonic chaos. That’s the only way to describe this trio that features the talents of experimental guitarist, bassist James Plotkin ex-Scorn,OLD, ex-Discordance Axis, Burnt by the sun, melt banana drummer Dave Witte, and vocalist $peedranch of Venetian Snares collaborations. This is grind/punk/noise/intensity of the most experimental and superior variety. But the immaculate precision used to assemble and arrange the tracks creates a tumultuous mix that is the musical equivalent of surrealistic art.( Plotkin along with Dave Witte and $peedranch ) is nothing short of what the soundtrack to World War III would be if the composers had never worked in any field other than video games. The track titles are also very 'apt.' Imagine Ministry, Aphex Twin,Boredoms,Mike patton and the Butthole Surfers, meeting at Robert Williams’ place to record some stuff while on massive quantities of acid. You haven’t heard ANYTHING AT ALL like this. Trust me.

Blurring the lines between grindcore, experimental noise, and in-your-face electronica, James Plotkin's Atomsmasher's debut comes off like a cross between Atari Teenage Riot, Merzbow, Aphex Twin, Fantômas, and Torture Garden-era Naked City. In other words, it's wild, it's noisy, it's jarring, and it will leave most listeners either very happy or very annoyed. Vocalist DJ Speedranch proves himself to be an obnoxious screamer par excellence on the level of Mr. Bungle's Mike Patton or the Boredoms' Yamatsuka Eye, although, in truth, his voice is often digitally processed and distorted beyond the point of recognition. The same goes for Dave Witte's drumming; his effects-treated percussion frequently sounds more like the work of an abused drum machine. Together with James Plotkin's kaleidoscopic guitar-synth playing (he also plays bass), it can be hard to tell who is doing what -- the array of digital skipping noises, crunchy static sounds, distortion blasts, and other miscellaneous debris is not what you'd typically expect from a guitar/bass/drum/vocals lineup. It isn't all noise and aggression, though, as there are several moments of spacy, guitar-generated ambience scattered amidst the chaos. There is also a welcome sense of humor present: listen to how they juxtapose a goofy children's song with an especially grating Speedranch yelp at the end of "Placebo". ISIS-Remix and interpretations:
Isis has gotten better and better and better with each release since the Red Sea. But as their work has become more polished, it has also become less challenging. I like a challenge, and I like this album precisely BECAUSE it took me 20 listens to see anything in it but static and feedback and screaming. It IS alienating and I appreciate that - it keeps out the riff-raff. The difficulty of this material makes its ultimate enjoyment all the sweeter.
And like it or not, this sort of experimentation is what Isis has always been about. As catchy as Oceanic may seem, it was pretty damn risky to crossbreed Tangerine Dream and Napalm Death. This compilation takes similarly huge risks, and they don't all pay off, but its a worthwhile journey and a great introduction to a bunch of acts I would otherwise never have heard of. The Tim Hecker and Venetian Snares tracks stand out, and I replay the Speedranch remix compulsively.
Admittedly, this is not very much like Isis. The raw material is mostly (like 66%) taken from (the raw session recordings of) Oceanic, but the end product bears as much resemblance to it as...say...the Charleton Heston version of Planet of the Apes does to the Tim Burton's remake.

This is a reissue of some early five-inch they released. I'm not even sure why they're reissuing this. This is not peak AN; they totally got better as time passed. The remix CD that comes with it doesn't make sense either, because only the DJ Speedranch and Justin Broadrick remixes are any good. In fact, the Merzbow remix is terrible, proving my current thesis that Merzbow is old and boring now and people who go to see him in concert and shit are fooling the fuck out of themselves.

Mijn Mening
Phantomsmasher is één van de vele muzikale projecten van James Plotkin. Samen met drummer Dave Witte en vocalist Speedranch laat hij zich helemaal los op dit album. Het resultaat is een vreemde combinatie van "intelligente" grindcore en electronica. Ondanks de chaos die in de nummers vaak overheerst, zit er wel degelijk structuur in, hoewel die misschien pas na een paar luisterbeurten duidelijk wordt.
Het totaalplaatje lijkt misschien nog het meest op een electronische versie van de hardere nummers van de band Naked City. De vocals (die hier overigens niet zo'n grote rol spelen als in de meeste bands) van DJ Speedranch zijn dan ook niet eens zo anders dan die van Naked City's Yamatsuka Eye, de vocals van Speedranch zijn echter vervormd met behulp van de computer.
Wat de cd zeker ten goede komt is dat er ook rustige momenten zijn. Ook is er plaats voor een beetje humor; tijdens het luisteren kom je zelfs het Teletubbies theme tegen.
Al met al is dit gewoon een erg sterke cd, hoewel het zeker niet geschikt is voor iedereen, vooral doordat het nou niet bepaald de meest toegankelijke cd is. Beoordeling
