HURRICANE … Wall of Sound [Import]
Put some GRACE in my face …. I first got introduced to GRACE JONES from a fellow dj friend in NYC back in 1976, when he slipped on the turntables the 12” remixes “ THAT’S THE TROUBLE, 7:02 min” & “SORRY, 6:42 min.” by Ms. JONES on Beam Junction Records. I remember hearing her voice and instantly fell in love with her. The next day I had the 12” vinyl in my hands and playing them for the first time in Phila. that weekend. A year later in 1977 she released the 12” version of “ I NEED A MAN, 7:30 MIN.” that exploded on the club scene and gay men everywhere found a new diva to dance the night away to. I have seen Ms. Jones at least 6 times, the first time was in NYC in a club filled with hundreds of gay men screaming to a black goddess as she sang “I NEED A MAN” back to them, crawling on the floor, vamping and performing in a way that only Grace can perform. I saw her twice in Phila at the Pier Dance and met her at Club Egypt where I once spun on a night that she performed there. I also saw her at Roseland where she performed with a live tiger, which is avail on dvd. Her shows are always theatrical, haunting and spine tingling shows that are etched in your heart, mind and soul. Ms. JONES has evolved from modeling, singing , acting back to singing by releasing hr first cd [ as an import] in almost twenty years. I have been waiting for Ms. JONES to come out of retirement and bring her style back to the dance floors. Something we need in this dance age, where every song almost has the same endless thumping beat. GRACE brings rhythm back to the dance floors which seasoned dj’s should enjoy the change. The team behind “ Hurricane “ on Wall of Sound is Sly and Robbie who have worked with Ms. JONES on earlier projects to Phillip Sheppard. Also this year Grace Jones to play at the Meltdown Festival, having turned in the performance of the season, dressed only in a corset, thong and laser-firing headpieces this video can be seen on YouTube
“ This is my voice, my weapon of choice “ … Ms. JONES chants as the first song begins on “This is”. It has a nice reggae dance beat, which should go well in the clubs and should be a good remix candidate. The cd segues from song to song including “Williams’ Blood” is a song about the Jones’ family from her preacher father to her mother, brother and sister ends with a choir chanting “Amazing Grace” and the preacher announcing that GRACE JONES “is in the house” into the club hit “Corporate Cannibal” that is being played in NY clubs with the lyrics: “ Pleased to meet you, pleased to have you on my plate
your meat is sweet to me
your destiny
your fate
you’re my life support, your life is my sport
I’m a man-eating machine .”
Not a high energy dance hit, it’s a deep , haunting and typical Grace attitude for the fans. The video to “Corporate Cannibal” is done in the typical warped JONES style.
“I’m Crying [ Mother’s Tear] “ is a slow heart felt tribute to her mother. “Well Well Well” starts off in true old fashioned GRACE JONES style as well as “Love You To Life”and Sunset Sunrise” . True GRACE fans will appreciate this throw back style to some of her earlier songs.
“Hurricane” which was released about three years ago as a remix for club dj’s did very well in clubs. This version is a laid back funk version with it’s lyrics ; "From cradle to grave"

And I can be cool, soft as the breeze,
I'll be a hurricane, ripping up trees!”
“Devil In My Life” closes this cd, and is a deep, haunting song that evokes the dark side of GRACE. It let’s you know that GRACE JONES is alive and well and still the “diva” of the gay club underground scene and true “diva” to GRACE fans. Now all we need is this cd to be released in the states and a tour by Ms. JONES. Because I need some GRACE IN MY FACE.
Her other hits include “PULL UP TO THE BUMPER, , SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM, LA VIE EN ROSE, NIPPLE TO THE BOTTLE, MY JAMAICAN GUY, WALKING IN THE RAIN and WARM LEATHERETTE” to name a few.
And to this day seasoned dj’s still play them and like me close out the night with either “I NEED A MAN “ or “LA VIE EN ROSE” in true GRACE style.

Mention “Unfinished Sympathy” to anyone who has ever visited a nightclub and the chances are their eyes will immediately mist over. PARADISE GARAGE : The Paradise Garage was open from 1977 to 1987 on King Street in New York City. Resident DJ throughout, Larry Levan played Disco, Funk, Boogie and anything else that got the masses grooving. I want to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Mel Cheren, the 'Godfather of Disco', who passed away Friday Dec. 14,2007.
Mel was founder of West End Records, as well as philanthropist, activist, artist and all-around music pioneer; Mel Cheren was also, at least in my mind, one of the leading figures in disco's resurgence and ongoing recognition today. He is responsable for music mad records by Karen Young and Taana Gardner that are a familair voice on the disco dance floor. To his championing of DJ Larry Levan's life and legendary PARADISE GARAGE NYC, he had indirectly played a huge part in my own ( as well many others') serious introduction to disco, dance and rhythm sounds.
He also was a pioneer in helping with NYC's AIDS crises in the early 80's. By bringing the gay community together when the goverment did not give a shit in helping
I had the pleasure of meeting Mel in Philadelphia and it was an honer to shake his hand and speak to him. As I said to the crowd in July at the Phila. premier of ' Godfather of Disco ' , " We Thank-you for what you did for us as dj's and the people who love to dance. And, I can still pull out the old Karen Young, Taana Gardner songs and the dance floor explodes. Thankyou sir, and the Paradise Garage will live on forever and so will you."
Deep in my heart I know that heaven is a mass nightclub. I vision Larry manning the turntables with you in the booth with him.
Your music will always be a beat in mamy of our hearts.

I was born March 1955 and raised in Philadelphia PA, until I was approx. 16 years old, then I moved to Berks County to finish school. After school I moved back to Phila in 1974. Started hanging out in the underground gay discos. I would always gravitate to the dj booth, watching them mix records to a packed floor. they were like gods, to these dance worshippers. This is what I wanted to do, because it was making people smile, celebrate life and each other.
There was one club The Allegro on Walnut St., it was hot. Being under age my friend Terry use to sneak me in. You went up stairs to the dance floor, and it was packed. I remember being amazed at the sound, lights and all the guys dancing their asses off that the building actually shook. I remember being introduced to the dj, and he invited me in the dj booth. My heart pounded with excitement … being raised above the dance floor, the lights flashing and every person on the floor was under the dj’s spell. Watching him que and mix music, the beat flowing from one song to another … never missing a beat. The music building from one song to another, the dancers responding in a trance tribal ritual under the dj’s spell. I knew that I found my calling, this was what I wanted. I wanted to spin music, so that I can give people the joy and release that they so much searched for. An outlet from the day of working to a nite of release and celebration of life. So, I started hanging around the underground dance clubs near the dj booth, watching and talking to the dj’s, trying to get one to teach me the mixing technic. One nite at the old Loft, a guest dj was up from Baltimore. Rich was a handsome man,and we took to each other instantly. He was the resident dj at the Hippopotomus [the Hippo] in Baltimore. Before I knew it, I was in Baltimore sharing his apartment. During the day it was a non-stop mixing class, queing records, matching beat to beat and creating and endless stream of dance music. At nites, I went to the club watching him mix and the crowds reaction. The floor was constantly packed and the crowd showed their appreciation. One Sat. nite, he turned to me and said “take over”. I literally shit my pants, fear raced through my body. I protested saying I can not do this, I am not ready. His response … “ You got 5 minutes, the music will stop and I will point to you when the crowd looks up.” Thankfully the man had a heart, he was playing a song that I practice mixing tons of times. I searched for the next record, my hands shaking I slid the vinyl on the rotating mat. I qued the needle into the groove and listened through the headphones. Never looking up, I mixed these two songs like I have done many times before. I never recalled hearing the mix, but when I peeked unto the dance floor I saw the whole floor still dancing under the flashing lights. Richie smiled and said that I did not miss a beat and left the dj booth. I continued mixing for the next hour, and then we took turns mixing back and forth. I was now an official dj, because the Hippo became my first dj-ing job. Ta – Dah ! Such a Cinerfella story, I know but the truth....
I was a resident dj in clubs like The Hippo- Baltimore MD, Dirty Ednas, Chester Inn Disco, Chez Pare' , Little Johns, The Mansion - Atlantic City NJ , The Tally Ho, The Fiddler, Landis Valley Disco, The Village, The Warehouse - Lancaster PA, The Glass Door - Reading PA, KURTZ , Pepperbox , Eqqus , 8th Floor , Phase One, Tribal, Pulsations , Shampoo , Dome - Philadelphia PA. I did guest appearances in NYC, Toronto CANADA. I helped out at the early Blue Ball party in Phila. I also did the RNC Convetion in Phila. 2000 and special events that were affilated with MTV

.... I met many club dj's and remixers. My number ONE MAN is WALTER GIBBONS . He was a fantastic dj/remixer personal friend from NYC and ruled in the Salsoul Disco Dance days. When Loleatta Halloway, First Choice, Judy Cheeks, and The Salsoul Orchestra ruled the NYC dance clubs. He literally took me under his wings and taught me to spin NY dj style. I recall nights in the dj booth at the underground clubs, watching literally thousands of people dancing to his sets for hours. The man is a ANGEL. ... Other dj's are VICTOR CALDERONE , I love watching this man spin and control the crowd. His club parties are out of this world. From a packed dance floor with a thousand people people dancing to his set, blending his music into a stage that has an orchastra playing , opera singers singing along with his music and bringing the crowd to an uncontrolled frenzy. This man is a true master of the turntables. Your parties at Crobar NYC are hot and sweaty as hell! ... PETER RAUHOFER, you nasty "Club 69" dj, your hot and another master of the turntables. HURRICANE … Wall of Sound [Import]
Put some GRACE in my face …. I first got introduced to GRACE JONES from a fellow dj friend in NYC back in 1976, when he slipped on the turntables the 12” remixes “ THAT’S THE TROUBLE, 7:02 min” & “SORRY, 6:42 min.” by Ms. JONES on Beam Junction Records. I remember hearing her voice and instantly fell in love with her. The next day I had the 12” vinyl in my hands and playing them for the first time in Phila. that weekend. A year later in 1977 she released the 12” version of “ I NEED A MAN, 7:30 MIN.” that exploded on the club scene and gay men everywhere found a new diva to dance the night away to. I have seen Ms. Jones at least 6 times, the first time was in NYC in a club filled with hundreds of gay men screaming to a black goddess as she sang “I NEED A MAN” back to them, crawling on the floor, vamping and performing in a way that only Grace can perform. I saw her twice in Phila at the Pier Dance and met her at Club Egypt where I once spun on a night that she performed there. I also saw her at Roseland where she performed with a live tiger, which is avail on dvd. Her shows are always theatrical, haunting and spine tingling shows that are etched in your heart, mind and soul. Ms. JONES has evolved from modeling, singing , acting back to singing by releasing hr first cd [ as an import] in almost twenty years. I have been waiting for Ms. JONES to come out of retirement and bring her style back to the dance floors. Something we need in this dance age, where every song almost has the same endless thumping beat. GRACE brings rhythm back to the dance floors which seasoned dj’s should enjoy the change. The team behind “ Hurricane “ on Wall of Sound is Sly and Robbie who have worked with Ms. JONES on earlier projects to Phillip Sheppard. Also this year Grace Jones to play at the Meltdown Festival, having turned in the performance of the season, dressed only in a corset, thong and laser-firing headpieces this video can be seen on YouTube
“ This is my voice, my weapon of choice “ … Ms. JONES chants as the first song begins on “This is”. It has a nice reggae dance beat, which should go well in the clubs and should be a good remix candidate. The cd segues from song to song including “Williams’ Blood” is a song about the Jones’ family from her preacher father to her mother, brother and sister ends with a choir chanting “Amazing Grace” and the preacher announcing that GRACE JONES “is in the house” into the club hit “Corporate Cannibal” that is being played in NY clubs with the lyrics: “ Pleased to meet you, pleased to have you on my plate
your meat is sweet to me
your destiny
your fate
you’re my life support, your life is my sport
I’m a man-eating machine .”
Not a high energy dance hit, it’s a deep , haunting and typical Grace attitude for the fans. The video to “Corporate Cannibal” is done in the typical warped JONES style.
“I’m Crying [ Mother’s Tear] “ is a slow heart felt tribute to her mother. “Well Well Well” starts off in true old fashioned GRACE JONES style as well as “Love You To Life”and Sunset Sunrise” . True GRACE fans will appreciate this throw back style to some of her earlier songs.
“Hurricane” which was released about three years ago as a remix for club dj’s did very well in clubs. This version is a laid back funk version with it’s lyrics ; "From cradle to grave"
I am woman, I am son!
I can give birth to sheep, I can give birth to son!
And I can be cool, soft as the breeze,
I'll be a hurricane, ripping up trees!”
“Devil In My Life” closes this cd, and is a deep, haunting song that evokes the dark side of GRACE. It let’s you know that GRACE JONES is alive and well and still the “diva” of the gay club underground scene and true “diva” to GRACE fans. Now all we need is this cd to be released in the states and a tour by Ms. JONES. Because I need some GRACE IN MY FACE.
Her other hits include “PULL UP TO THE BUMPER, , SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM, LA VIE EN ROSE, NIPPLE TO THE BOTTLE, MY JAMAICAN GUY, WALKING IN THE RAIN and WARM LEATHERETTE” to name a few.
And to this day seasoned dj’s still play them and like me close out the night with either “I NEED A MAN “ or “LA VIE EN ROSE” in true GRACE style.
