A 28 year-old native of Springfield, Missouri, dj Spiral (a.k.a. Kent Frost)
grew up with an unexplainable passion for electronic music ever since he was
introduced to it at the age of 11. After roughly 4 years of spending much of his time
in music stores rummaging through CDs, he had developed enough of a collection
of not only electronic music, but also more popular material as well, and when
he was 15, began DJing for his brothers fraternity parties and even a few
weddings with two standard home-style CD players, and the most affordable
multi-channel mixer from Radio Shack. With enough practice, he was even able to
find that some tracks would coincidentally have the same tempo, thus with the
right hand timing he was able to achieve basic beat-matching without pitch
control. However, never having the funds enough to by more professional-style
equipment for vinyl DJing, and being that the digital technology was not as
up-to-par as (and much more expensive than) the present-day digital equipment,
he moved on to other hobbies such as videography and attended classes at
Glendale High and at Ozarks Technical Community College for video production.
When he was 19, he began working for a professional photo/video equipment retail
store where he worked for over 2 years, soaking in knowledge about photography
like a sponge. In August of 2002 while working at the Battlefield Mall, he came
to meet members of a new message board that had emerged following the closing of
Afterhours Nightclub in downtown Springfield. In December of the same year, he
bought his first set of turntables, and within two and a half weeks he began
handing out his first demo, Inward. I got a much more incredible response than I
ever imagined I would from that demo because I hadn't ever touched a set of
turntables before August of that year. If it hadn't been for my previous
experience, there's no way I could've been able to do that as soon as I did.
Among the first hundred or so members, he watched and participated from then on
as the community exploded into the phenomenon that is 417Vibe. In an effort to
give back to the community, he lends Springfields electronic music culture his
photographic talents in an attempt to preserve its history. When Kent isn't
spinning records, he uses his graphic design, web design, and photography
knowledge to provide a multitude of services to the general public at
www.spiralphoto.com.
Oh, and here ya go, here's a short music video I made a few years back.
Enjoy. :)
This is so neat. It looks like miniatures but this is some kind of photography. I know you like video and photogriphy, so I thought you would enjoy this.
My new radio show, marooned in realtime, will premier @ 2pm-5pm Sunday, March 22nd. I will be spinning ambient, downtempo, dub, trip-hop, house, and anything else I feel like. I don't know that we are going yet...Ryan is gonna see what magic he can work out at work. I told Lee that him and Ben could have the other 2 tickets since they are going anyway but if he doesn't care to maybe split the cost of a VIP ticket with Ben then you can go.
