Once upon a time there was a place, Hotel Costes, and its music guru :
Stéphane Pompougnac.
Two names definitely linked to each other, as the music lovers all over
the world have identified the place to its famous series of compilations.
In Paris, Stéphane started out at " Café Costes ", at " Le Queen ", at
" Le diable des Lombards ", but also at " Le Privilège ", the mythic
backstage club of " Le Palace ", playing house music a long time before
Chicago was a reference.
Then, he moved moved on to " Les Bains ", where he encountered
Claude Challe, who broadened his music scope, and one day he met up
again with Jean-Louis Costes, who asked him to mix for a residency at
his new hotel restaurant. This was back in 1997.
Little by little, Stéphane started leaving his musical mark in the hôtel.
The customers, hooked into his universe, asked him about his music
and mix. This sparkled the idea of a compilation in order to spread in
the world the spirit of the Hôtel Costes.
Today, the compilations mixed by Stéphane Pompougnac have already
spun round the earth, drawing more than two millions passengers a-
board this parisian night-flight .
Djing in Italy, in New York ,hopping from Bristol at Massive Attack’s
party, In Ibiza, Tokyo, Djakarta, Beijing, Dubaî, Rio,whirling Nicole
Kidman at Cannes festival for the release of “ Moulin Rouge ”, with
Harrisson Ford for the 3rd Indiana Jones, performing at Cameron Diaz’s
restaurant in Miami..
Forever between planes. Mixing jet lags and music, he now looks at
his trajectory with humour, feeling that this whirlwind is a little to much.
He doesn’t want to get pegged under the heading of “DJ lounge mixer.”
That would be a far too narrow way of grasping what he’s about.
As a fulfil musician,he gets away now and then from the waves of hype
by composing and producing his own songs. His two albums :
"Living On The Edge" released in 2003 and "Hello Mademoiselle" in
2006 featuring Michael Stipe (REM) , Clémentine Célarié, Noémi (from
Zimpala), Cathy Battistessa, Juliette Oz, Tiger Lily, Alain Chamfort
Linda Lee Hopkins ,Ného, Anthony Bamburyand also the voice of
Yves Montant on "Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau ",and Stéphane’s
old time friend Charles Schillings.
Today, Stéphane Pompougnac is one of the most required DJ, spreading
the music "à la française" all over the world.
Far from resting and looking at his success, and side to the Hôtel Costes
compilations to which he still provides his talents with volume 12th and " Costes Decade", (a double cd best of) , Stéphane has now
created his own label :" SPP " and he is preparing unexpected uptempo
grooves and surprises to be released during 2010.
