I get a lot of my inspiration from our humble tribal beginings. I look at raves today and think we are just doing the same thing people have been doing since the beginning of man. Of course a lot has changed since then, but the idea is still the same.
I think to myself why did primitive people dance in the first place? weren't there more important things that needed to be done than dancing? I mean I would be worried about getting eating by a wild animal, or worried how was I going to get my next meal. But as I look at why we dance today it seems clear that the answer is just to get some kind of release of an other wise hard existence.
House music is at the core of that idea, with the standard 4 to the floor beat, you can't help yourself in just wanting to move in some type of rhythmic motion. It is in our blood.
this inspires me to spin music that gives people that release, that joy, that feeling of there is something more than just eating, sleeping and working. there is ecstasy that can be reached.
So as far as influences go, my biggest influence is the human race!
The first thing that comes to mind is my passion for spinning. I'm a disc jockey and have been for about three years now.
I'm a house DJ because that is my favorite type of dance music. House, trance, drum and bass, electro, and electronica, all have the energy that gives a person, a sense of freedom and release. There is no set type of dancing that takes place with these genres of music and you are free to move as you feel. I believe there is a sense of joy and ecstasy associated with this music and that's why I love it the most.
It all started when I went to a rave about five years ago and heard this booming music that simply blew me away. Before that experience I had my own stereotypes on what "Raving" was about, but it turned out to be nothing like I expected. Prior to that, I was really into punk and classic rock, so this seemed like a weird progression, although it did not disappoint, in fact it seduced me in like a siren attracting a clueless man to her lair, it was so enticing; from that day I wanted to know more about the scene and the music.
I soon began to get all kinds of electronic related music, from house, progressive house, tech house, acid jazz, electro, drum and bass, trance, deep trance etc. I started to get into vinyls and started to build a collection. I then learned how to beat match and held my first party on a rainy night in my friend's back yard…the rest is history.
It's funny because my dad always gives me shit about spinning records. Not in a hurtful way, but out of pure amazement that all I am doing is playing records, well at least according to him. He's a musician who plays guitar, piano, drums, etc and he can't get over the fact that I'm not really playing an instrument, as he puts it. We usually have a good laugh about it, and although he may not get it, he still supports what I do.
For the sake of arguing, I would like to say that being a DJ involves more than just playing records, it's about setting a mood, and creating an atmosphere for people boogie down and enjoy themselves in. That's what I aim for.
I have come a long way from that night in the rain and I will only get better from here. I have played a few clubs, a ton of parties and hopefully a place near you soon. If you like what you hear send me a message or drop a comment. I'm always willing to strike up a conversation.
