He's known as DJ Surge-N online and on promotional media, but he normally goes by the name: Asad Naseem.
Asad was born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire (1988) in England. He has always enjoyed music since a child and was always very interested in the different versions of a song that were made available to consumers on various media formats. He bought CD singles (even ones that he didn't particularly like) if they had remixes of the original track on them. Not surprisingly, he still does the same today! There has always been something about remixes that he's enjoyed and it began at the young age of 12. During this time, he became increasingly interested in the way videos were made by many artists, and why their songs in their corresponding videos were sometimes altered to the versions on the album. This also applied to tracks receiving radio airplay that differed from their corresponding album and/or single tracks whether it be differences in duration or mixing. Britney Spears' "(You Drive Me) Crazy (The Stop Remix!)", which was released in 1997, is the track that fueled this curiosity and brought him to where he is today: A professional and talented producer.
Between 1998 and 1999, Asad began making his own simple little musical edits while attending primary school in Cardiff, South Wales. Sadly, in 2000, his to-be brother passed away. Consequently, the tragedy caused a change in atmosphere within his household and he changed. Music became his escape in an effort to take his mind off such strong emotional issues he had to deal with at such a young age. It comes to no surprise that, as a result, music became an obsession that took him on a journey he'd never have imagined.
The year 2001 was a new beginning for him as his now seven-year-old sister, Anya, was born and he moved to Motherwell, Scotland. It was here, in Motherwell, where he was provided with professional audio software and equipment that allowed him to fuel his experimenting further. It wasn't until he moved to Auckland, New Zealand that his music skills became so much more refined than what they used to be. It was in Auckland he'd create his first remix, a remix which he didn't realise would go on to become incredibly popular on the internet.
It was in New Zealand he became DJ Surge-N, differing from most DJs in that he did not DJ live, but instead produced and remixed from the comforts of his home. In November of 2004, he created one of his first projects using the fine editing skills he gained over the years. This project was called 'Tick-Toxic' and made an initially short, yet extremely successful, debut on the internet in January 2005. It was played on a radio station in New Zealand, and there were immense amounts of downloads for the track largely from fansites of the two artists involved in 'Tick-Toxic' (Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani). A promotional video he made for the track made a very short debut on the internet around the same time and the feedback he received was generally very positive.
The 'Tick-Toxic' promotional video made a proper 'debut' in late 2006 on YouTube.com. The number of people viewing the video has been increasing rapidly ever since and has drawn almost 2 million viewers on that remix alone! Viewers have shown their enthusiasm and support for the track and Asad himself with fantastic comments and ratings on YouTube, MySpace particularly. Now Asad has people requesting to download and purchase "Tick-Toxic", as well as his other mixes, from iTunes, to put onto their iPods everyday (which, to fans' dismay, was not allowed due to copyright restrictions.) To make up for that, Asad provided a treat to his fans by re-releasing an updated version of "Tick-Toxic" on April 29th, 2008, as soon as the original version of "Tick-Toxic" hit the 1 million mark. To this day, he still finds it hard to believe how the mix made such an impact on the online community as a result of his growing audio expertise. Consequently, he has gained trusted fans who continually support him and look forward to being shocked and surprised by new works he comes up with.
From the year 2005 to present, he has produced many additional mash-ups and remixes, some of which remain unreleased. Of the mixes that he has released, following the success of "Tick-Toxic", the majority of them have been extremely successful, particularly after gaining fans' trust in his ability to provide quality remixes. He plans to release many more works in the future which will be sure to continually raise eyebrows.
Aside from his greatest passion, music, one of Asad's other great passions is Science and Medicine. He is currently studying BSc (Biomedical Science) at the University of Auckland, going onto his third year. He enjoys gaming, athletic sports, fitness and swimming, and is a huge fan of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter heptology.
Look out for more great remixes coming your way soon!
