My Heroes are my Grandparents, Stanley Sheppard and Mabel
Coleman. They were taken from their parents in 1915 and incarcerated on Mona Mona Mission. The mission was their home until they were in their 30's, that's when the Seventh Day Adventist Church sent them and their young family to Papua New Guinea as missonaries (I just found out they were among the first Aboriginals in Australia to be sent overseas for this purpose). Throughout their life they worked hard, struggled, saw their tribal lands disapear and family slaughtered, dying from leprosy and other introduced diseases. Constantly the the victims of racism and worse. Eventually getting an exemption from the Act in 1955, (MY GRANDPARENTS BECAME FREE PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY IN 1955?) when with their family moved to Oak Forest and then later to Kuranda. "Thank you my wonderful Grandparents for staying strong, never turning to drugs or alcohol when things could not get any worse and laying a solid foundation for future generations of the Sheppard family". I owe the person I am today to you both..You are true Heroes xxx
