D-Lynx is the fusion of three formally trained voices, blended with keen ears for high production quality, and formidable writing talent to supply the material for these voices. The group comprises Jermaine “Jermz” Wright, Alwayne “Wayne” Harrison, and Fabion “Felch” Mclean.
Each of them has passed the acid test of being on school choirs, and has managed to stand out enough to leave the pack and head out on their own.
They joined forces in 1998 while they were students of the Charlemont High School in St Catherine. Young, energetic, and armed with separate musical backgrounds, it was not long before they started to become stronger as a group to make solid music.
The youngest of the group is Alwayne “Wayne” Harrison. He is 21 years old, a son of the parish of St Catherine, and was bitten by the music bug quite early in his life. While growing up, he constantly fed his ears the music of Ben E. King, Craig David, Tracey Chapman, Usher, Beres Hammond, and Lukey D among others, listening to their silky smoothness, and practicing endlessly to achieve it. He can remember at age seven while at Primary School, he was thrust into performing one of Ben E. King’s greatest classics… ‘Stand By Me’…..while he was at a school concert.
Without hesitation, without fear, and without problems, he did it, and to rave reviews as well from all ages. Assessing his childhood competence and the favourable crowd response ticked off something irreversible inside him, and he knew music was the choice. Inevitably, by his entry into Charlemont High, he found his way into the school choir. In addition to his talent, he harboured dreams of becoming an architect or solo musician. As fate would have it, as the bond between himself and the group grew stronger, he held on more to music and decided it would be his path in this life. Wayne was not formally trained as a musician, but he strums out harmonies every now and again with the keyboards. In his free time, he dabbles into visual arts and socializes. He declares that if it were not for music, he would have to be doing graphic designing or architecture. Within the next three years, he expects to be fusing more music genres to get different sounds and developing young talent in music.
The second of the trio is Fabion “Felch” McLean. 23- year- old Felch grew up in St Catherine and earned his nickname from his cousin during childhood. He attended the Mount Nebo Primary, Charlemont High, and then Jose Marti High. He was pulled into appreciating music as a youngster by listening to established acts such as Craig David, Sizzla, Buju, Tracey Chapman, Beres Hammond, Jah Cure, and Lukey D. Expectedly, he began the musical journey from as early as Primary School. He remembers performing at several concerts as a boy, but never settled down on a serious level until at Charlemont. By observation, and by listening to honest friends, he realized his potential and easily he made the school choir. After settling comfortably into the rhythm and rigours of the choir, and developing even more vocal ability, he formed friendships with the rest of the group and decided that he would stick to the path of music. Since then, there has been no looking back. Felch also has musical skills. He plays the drums, and touches a few notes on the keyboard as well. He sees himself as a complete musician, who within two years, will be writing and recording three times what he is doing now, and managing a steady career. Fabion “Felch” McLean’s next career of choice would have to be a chemical engineer.
Jermaine “Jermz” Wright, the last of the trio is also 23. He is also a son of St Catherine, and attended the Ewarton Primary School before going to Charlemont High. He used to throw friendly deejay jabs at his friends during his Primary School years, doing mock clashes, and throwing slight lyrical punches towards them. His real journey into music however came from an innocent challenge while in High School. He was dared by friends to learn, and subsequently perform a particular tune by Busta Rhymes within a certain time. Being the competitive person he is, he learnt the song and performed it as challenged. This feat though quickly forgotten by his friends, only served to get him more seriously interested in music. He then fed his ears to the music from a variety of genres and from different artistes. Tupac, Craig David, Busta Rhymes, Gregory Isaacs, Beres Hammond, Assassin, Whitney Houston, Sizzla, are only a few within the wide mixture. At that time, he was more into deejaying, but settled down and developed smooth and composed vocals after meeting the rest of the group. His skills outside of music include playing football, socializing, and surfing the internet performing anything that comes with a challenge. He notes that were it not for performing, his next career of choice would have to be related to music, whether at the production or business level.
Since becoming a group, D’Linx has not settled into mediocrity. With big dreams as underground artistes in 1998, they wrote, practiced, and recorded several tracks from a small studio inside a basement. They did several demos and circulated them, some of which later found themselves into important industry hands. Among the tracks recorded in their early days are ‘Would You Love Me’ which eventually was released and received steady airplay, ‘Hooked On You’ which also received favourable airplay,
Still developing as recording artists, they also honed their craft on the stage as well. They have tasted the sweet rewards of the stage as performers on the Heineken Heatwave concert in 2004 which featured American rapper 50 Cent, the popular Pepsi Teensplash, and Ewarton Jerkfest. They have also made live performances on Television Jamaica’s ‘Smile Jamaica’ morning programme, and CVM’s Tha Party’. By 2006, their progress was noted, and soon the rewards came. They were honoured and rewarded with a record deal by the Big Yard Label, an elite production house known for working only with extremely talented acts. Since their signing in 2006, their rate of recording has soared even further. Among the tracks done since then are ‘Let’s Go’, ‘Bruk Out’, ‘Diggi Dong’, ‘Her Own Way’, ‘Good Things’, and ‘Joe Grind’. The group describes the experience with Big Yard as a blessing. “Big Yard brings out the best in us,” declares Wayne. “The camp sets us in the right frame of mind for working, and brings out more of our creativity,” adds Felch and Jermz. They’re now steadily recording with the Big Yard camp, with plans for a major album to be released soon.
