DMC WORLD DJ CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 - South African Leg
THIS YEARS COMPETITION:
The 2009 South African DMC DJ Championships are upon us. Last year we saw a phenomenal final where our panel judges nominated The Cutt as SA's number one DJ. This year, DMC SA will be concentrating on qualifying rounds in the major cities. The top 3 DJs will be selected from each of these heats. These DJs will perform at the SA Finals at Mercury Live in Cape Town on Fri 31 July 2009.
This grand finale will crown a South African Champion who will then go on to perform at the World Final in the UK. This South African DJ will have 6 minutes to compete against the world’s best. Last year’s SA Champ The Cutt is gearing up for a serious competition, as much new DJ talent emerges from both Cape Town and Johannesburg thanks to the platform which DMC provides. We are sure to again see a culmination of the freshest DJ talent in South Africa. Only pro DJ turntables (vinyl) and DJ mixers without effects may be used. Although we occasionally get sponsored by digital media, this is still a vinyl only DJ competition.
Our judging panel includes legendary DJs like DJ Redwood (3 Times SA Champ), DJ Azhul, DJ Klinikal, DJ Hamma and various other turntable professors who will judge with high scrutiny. The DMC Championships is a global event where DJs from across the world compete against each other to earn themselves a golden set of turntables.
Around mid-year DJs focus on preparations and hours are spent constructing meticulously timed 6 minute sets showcasing the best of what that DJ can showcase - by using only vinyl, two turntables and a mixer.
DMC History...
DMC is the biggest global DJ organisation and have played a major part in redefining the role and the image of the DJ. Thanks to this, turntablism has now become a known term worldwide. The idea that a DJ could create something new and vibrant with two turntables, a mixer and vinyl was thrust into the public consciousness and we witnessed the rise of superstar battle DJs like Q-bert.
Keep it fresh:
When you enter the battles is important to know that you are not only battling it out locally, at the same time, DJs from across the globe are putting in hours of practise and will soon be cutting it up in their regional heats. So in actual fact, you are battling the world. Keep your routine fresh and make it flow with a well thought out structure. Also have more than one set prepared, and know how to link up different parts of sets so that you can be spontaneous if necessary. Always keep your best until you need it. Cut it up!
