Thanks Donna. You hit on the exact reason why Fr. Joe stresses several times in the book that we all need to "Point toward the moon." In other words, Don't allow yourself to be distracted by the elbow or dirt under the fingernail, i.e. the little things. Just point toward the moon, focus on the moon.
In effect, he's saying that we need to focus on the important lessons in life, e.g. taking care of others. Like you (and me), he believes the money and effort that religion invests in things such as banning gay marriage is more than a waste of energy and valuable time. It's an affront to the teachings of Jesus, who, according to Scripture, said that the poor and downtrodden were to be our priority. More than two thousand times the Christian Bible stresses this teaching, similar to the teachings of Confucius, Siddhartha, Muhammad, Rabbi Hillel and many other great teachers, all of whom stressed the need to live selflessly and to care for the poorest of the poor.
Personally, I think churches often use peripheral social issues to pretend like organized religion is doing something useful and God-abiding even though one-sixth to one-fifth of the world's population continues to live in abject poverty. Things are changing, though. Yes we can.

I figured out how to save usa. There are about 3 million people here. They have 700 BILLION for a bailout, they could afford to give us each 1 million or even 1 billion ! Problem solved huh?

I don't know if you noticed, but I'm rockin' in a CB shirt. I was out on Saturday with my girlfriend to listen to a band she manages, (they are awesome by the way), and had to wear the shirt I bought at the Silver Platter show! Hi Donna. Thanks for your insightful comment ref. my blog on the Declaration of Universal Human Rights, i.e. The Father Joe Doctrine. In case you're like me and don't circle back to blogs you've commented on, I'm cutting and pasting my response for you here: -- I know exactly what you mean. Some days I want to hide in frivolous pursuit and not think about the day-to-day connecting of the dots that might lead to improving this world. The larger task is overwhelming. In a way, I think that's why one-fifth or one-sixth of the world's citizens continue to live in abject poverty several decades after the wealthy member states of the UN promised to do something about extreme poverty. It easier to allow ourselves to be diverted by other, more solveable problems/issues.
I begin each chapter in The Gospel of Father Joe with something that Fr. Joe has written in his daily journals. I still have in my possession several years of his journals. Something I reprint at the beginning of Chapter 3 helps me on these days when I feel overwhelmed. It goes like this:
"Do not depend on the hope of results. When you’re doing the work you have taken on, you may have to face that your work will be apparently worthless. . . . As you get used to this idea you will start more and more to concentrate not on results but on the value, the rightness, the truth of the work itself."
— Father Joe’s daily journal, paraphrasing the Catholic mystic Thomas Merton
