Philip's Interests
|
| General | I like portable electronics, music, anime, and pretty doing new things. That's about it. | | Music | My favorite band is Sixpence None the Richer. I know a lot of people think they are a pop band. But they aren't. Especially their earlier stuff. I own every song they have ever released. Including "Bouquet" and "Northern Lights."
I like a lot of bands, music, and styles. My musical tastes tend to lean toward acoustic, and mostly obscure stuff. A scan of my iPod will reveal everything from The Matches to The Fiery Furnaces to Chris Clark to 6955. I like to listen to Eigen Radio a bit on the computer. Most of what I enjoy the most qualifies as purely noise. I can drive for an hour listening to radio stations distorting their way through each other and enjoy the purely audio chaos that provides. I can wear headphones at one of my jobs, which is pretty awesome. | | Movies | I like a wide variety of movies; but I'll just name the first five live action ones that pop into my head: Take Care of My Cat (Goyangileul butaghae), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and The Manchurian Candidate (1962). I like a lot of other stuff too; but you would have to ask me about those. | | Television | I barely watch tv; but I have a few shows I like. South Park, The Office, the Food Network from time to time, and the news. | | Books | Pilgrim's Progress is one of the best books, in my opinion. It is tied very closely with Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet." The other books I enjoy are Welcome to the NHK, Jennifer Government, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia, and I really enjoy well written graphic novels. A scan of my book shelf is really enough to scare people because I collect religious books and books that are considered "verboten" by general society. I have everything from a copy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the Book of Mormon. I enjoy history, and get a kick out of reading both left-wing and right-wing propoganda. I also love the fact that right next to James Dobson's "Children At Risk" is a copy of "Nerve's Book of Sex Ettiquette" next to a copy of "Kinsey, Sex, and Fraud" next to a copy of Koushun Takami's "Battle Royale." | | Heroes | As mentioned in "People I would like to meet" a bit earlier on this page, my hero is Scrooge McDuck. So, there. |

About me:
I run a website called DMG Ice, and that is my main business. It doesn't rake in the cash it once did, but I still like it. Also, it is a legitimate press organization, so I get to go to interesting events like E3, and get press access at concerts, conventions like A-Kon, etc. It also leads to meeting some very unusual people. I've met, spoke with, shaken hands with or hugged everyone from Astronauts like Jim Irwin to porn stars like Gina Savage to game developers like Shigeru Miyamoto to actors like Orlando Bloom to obscure web-celebs like Morgan Webb of G4/TechTV to Fred Gallagher of MegaTokyo. Yeah.. I know. I am terrible.
I've also been to or through most of the 50 states, parts of Canada, parts of Central America, and a lot of Europe. Yup.
I currently work at some sort of store that sells things. It helps pay the bills and support my terrible video game/anime/manga addictions. When I am not online, or wandering around in the cities, I can be found at my place of work, at an anime club that my company is a sponsor for, or asleep. I spend a lot of time being asleep. Which is a bit lonely. Oh, well.

Who I'd like to meet:
I have already met an extensive list of people, of varying stature and importance. I think that -right now- the majority of people I would like to meet.. are dead. This makes the whole point of wanting to meet them irrelevant. I would have loved to have met and talked to Douglas Adams, Ronald Reagan, Gunpei Yokoi, Osama Tezuka, and C.S. Lewis. If I could meet a fictional character, I definately would want to meet Scrooge McDuck. Why? Because he is an example of the perfect capitalist. He built his fortune with his own bare hands, and he doesn't actually USE that fortune for anything except playing in it and increasing it honestly. He doesn't buy favors, try to influence politics, or do anything dishonest with his money. He just... swims in it. He gets richer and he likes putting out the effort and scruples to do just that; but it appears that the only real reason he does this is a genuine love of money in its purest form, not the economic power it contains. In short: He is the ultimate collector. He doesn't amass wealth, he collects it, polishes it, and loves to watch it shine. He likes it because it is shines and sparkles from his own shrewdness and hard work. Kind of like how I feel after completing a video game or redesigning the site content. Scrooge is the epitome of that drive and thus, the only "hero" I really ever looked up to while growing up. Despite having met brilliant scientists, senators, actors, atheletes, etc.
