Music
In late 1962 THE BEATLES recorded "Love Me Do" and everything else since then, musically, has just been icing on the cake! To me, the union of McCartney/Lennon, those two talents coming together is no less a magnificent phenomenon than The Grand Canyon. If THE BEATLES are sliced bread, then the "best thing since sliced bread" has to be NEIL FINN. I absolutely love that guy's love-promoting writing from SPLIT ENZ, CROWDED HOUSE, THE FINN BROTHERS, and solo NEIL FINN, I love it all. That said, the most euphoric thing I've ever experienced is when BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND takes the stage. Other music I'm into: MARIA McKEE, TRAVIS, THE JAYHAWKS, LONE JUSTICE, JOHN HIATT, U2, VAN MORRISON, STEELY DAN, JACKSON BROWNE, MICHAEL HEDGES, LYLE LOVETT, THE DAVID CROWDER BAND, and a whole lot more! Once I saw a bumper sticker that said, "Without Music, Life Would Be A Mistake." I guess I agree.
Movies
The first two DVDs I ever bought were THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. That tells you something. Though I prefer movies that make you feel like someone ripped your heart out, make you want to change the world, make you think, or make you want to be a better person. Some examples are: THE KILLING FIELDS, CITY OF GOD (CIDADE DE DEUS), AMERICAN HISTORY X, REMAINS OF THE DAY, RABBIT-PROOF FENCE, SHADOWLANDS, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, THE ICE STORM, DEAD MAN WALKING, GLORY, MINDWALK, or IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. I really adore movies that are not all wrapped up with a pretty bow at the end such as LOST IN TRANSLATION, ZODIAC, MOMENTO, 25TH HOUR, THE TRUMAN SHOW, BLADE RUNNER, CHILDREN OF MEN, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, and LIMBO! I tend to follow directors. I really dig Paul Thomas Anderson and think his MAGNOLIA is a modern masterpiece. PUNCH DRUNK LOVE was great too. P.T.A. has not made a bad film. I love Spielberg: EMPIRE OF THE SUN, SCHINDLER'S LIST, MUNICH, JAWS, AMISTAD, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, THE COLOR PURPLE, E.T., SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, all amazing! Here are some of the other directors that seldom disappoint me: Stanley Kubrick (DR. STRANGELOVE; FULL METAL JACKET; A CLOCKWORK ORANGE), Oliver Stone (JFK; NATURAL BORN KILLERS; WORLD TRADE CENTER), Cameron Crowe (ELIZABETHTOWN; ALMOST FAMOUS; VANILLA SKY), Mel Gibson (APOCALYPTO; THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST; BRAVEHEART), David Fincher (THE GAME; FIGHT CLUB; SEVEN), Robert Redford (THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR; QUIZ SHOW; A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT), Wes Anderson (THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU; RUSHMORE; BOTTLE ROCKET), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (AMORES PERROS; 21 GRAMS; BABEL), David Lean (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA; THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI; A PASSAGE TO INDIA), and Sofia Coppola (LOST IN TRANSLATION; THE VIRGIN SUICIDES; MARIE ANTOINETTE). Sometimes I even pay attention to writers such as David Mamet (GLENGARRY GLENROSS; WAG THE DOG; STATE AND MAIN; THE SPANISH PRISONER; HEIST) or Charlie Kaufman (ADAPTATION; BEING JOHN MALKOVICH; ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND; CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND). Man, I love film!
Television
Right now I watch LOST. That's my number one current show. It's really good! Other shows I have loved in the past are: PICKET FENCES, TWIN PEAKS, THE X-FILES, THE ROCKFORD FILES, SEINFELD, L.A. LAW, THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, and STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE from 1975-1979 was fantastic and THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JOHNNY CARSON was amazing to watch, even now, a repeat just hooks me in with Carson's talent. Randomly, I love to watch things like MYTH BUSTERS, some documentary, or something on the history channel or Fox News or CNN. Record THIS WEEK WITH GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS on my D.V.R. every Sunday morning, best news show on television! Oh yea, yes, I admit it, I am hooked on SURVIVOR too. I even applied.
Books
I've never been into novels. I don't have a novel mind. I like non-fiction. That said, the first novel I ever loved was THE PIGMAN by Paul Zindel. I read it in 8th grade. When Zindel died in 2003 I reread it and dug it even more. One of the most important books I've read is HAPPINESS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM: A HUMAN NATURE REPAIR MANUEL by Dennis Prager. Neil T. Anderson's book VICTORY OVER THE DARKNESS has shaped me. For fun, I love Peter O'Toole's LOITERING WITH INTENT and Jim Ladd's RADIO WAVES: LIFE AND REVOLUTION ON THE FM DIAL. Brennan Manning is my current favorite author: RUTHLESS TRUST, ABBA'S CHILD, and THE RAGAMUFFIN GOSPEL!
Heroes
My hero is the apostle Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus (see Acts 7:58-28:31). I relate to him because he had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ (Acts, chapter 9). I admire him so because, in his words: "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation" (Philippians 4:11-13). The dude was a World changer and a good writer.
