SOUNDCITY:
an audio portrait of Chicago
LAUNCH PARTY!
WHEN: This Sunday, Aug. 13 @ 10 AM
WHERE: Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown, 300 W. 19th St.
HOW: The adventure begins Thursday, Aug. 11 on the website www.myspace.com/dogandponysoundcity where audio files and bike maps are accessible via the web as downloadable mp3s and image files respectively. We'll have some maps and CDs at the launch too. At the launch, we will hop on bikes or lace up our kicks and tour the southern and western sites, with the option of carrying on to the sites further north on your own.
WHY: Because you've never done something like this before! Coffee, donuts and water will be served. Come out for some free art and even meet the artists themselves. (Admission is free with a suggested $10 donation.)
ABOUT THE PROJECT: SoundCity is an interactive theater piece that features the streets of Chicago as the stage. This audio tour draws attention to movements and participants in Chicago's political history by telling the story of the places where they existed. Local artists created eight audio portraits of such landmark sites as the Hull House, Tree Studios, Meigs Field/Northerly Island, 21st Bridge and Chess Records. Audience members use a map to guide them to the locations included in the production.
The Portraits:
CHESS RECORDS by Cheryl Farney
Hear the history of this legendary recording studio and the women that passed
through its doors.
NORTHERLY ISLAND - by Jenny Lawton & Krissy Vanderwarker
Sounds recall the controversial demolition of Meigs Field and transformation into
Northerly Island.
HULL HOUSE by Katherine Zwick
Run by Jane Addams, this legendary home for the unwanted is celebrated as a haven for so many and a symbol of feminist power.
TREE STUDIOS - by Carolyn Hoerdemann
Constructed in 1894 and intended as a home for artists, the Tree Studios were a unique cultural oasis, home to many significant artists, and the nation's oldest-known artist studios.
21st STREET LIFT BRIDGE & CROSSING by Sorin Brouwers
21st Street and the Chicago River
Also known as Alton Junction, 21st Street Crossing is perhaps Chicago's most historically significant rail location and at one time, its busiest.
ASHLAND STREET COORIDOR By Margaret Noble
Ashland Avenue from Lake Street to Grand Avenue
1. CTA Green Line stop Ashland & Lake:
Stand under the bridge on the west side of Ashland. Then walk north on Ashland.
2. Dead Pigeon Grid:
Directly next to the alley between Carrol and Fulton Streets are two pigeons,
which have been trapped on inside of the building, perhaps for years.
3. Wild Foliage Alley:
At Arbour Place just before Metra bridge, follow the Metra tracks west.
4. Underneath the Metra Bridge:
Pause here, before crossing Kinzie.
5. Grand & Ashland
