Brace yourself and picture this; an album you can listen to from start to finish. That's what Dogboy has accomplished on his debut album Rebel Riddim on Suburban Noize Records. The album contains strong songs that are eclectic but focused, and unlike anything happening in mainstream music.
With a title like Rebel Riddim, one might expect a master of the obvious rebellious presentation of today's problems, but Dogboy sings of solutions. Defining the title with his own definition and liberating himself musically with his own soul revolution, he sings of love, unity and acceptance of the world we live in. No matter what style Dogboy delivers, the songs consist of clever lyrics, tight and short but sweet arrangements, and plenty of hooks.
If you survive drug addiction, alcohol abuse, entanglements with the law, jail, and women, what do you do? If you're Dogboy you write songs about it. “I put myself through the good, bad, and the ugly, but music is the one thing that always remained constant regardless of where my life was at. I don't think it's a choice anymore. I'd like to think I've learned from it. The gift is that I get to look back and laugh.”
Traveling around the world, Dogboy has immersed himself in the world's culturally rich music scene to create a musical melting pot that defies categorization. “I've always been drawn to other cultures because I felt there was a lack of it in my surroundings. I've been to ghettos all over the world and consistently found music by the people for the people, expressing the soul of their surroundings. No lack of culture there,” he says. “Bands I like seem to be rich in it and that inspired me to travel. My mission was to experience those places they sing about; London, Jamaica, Europe, South America, New Orleans, Memphis and New York just to name a few.”
Dogboy's diversity will resonate with fans of the punk rock roots of The Clash, musical hybrid Sublime, Damian Marley, and early Rolling Stones or The Beatles. Enriched by the world's culturally diverse music scene, Dogboy's Rebel Riddim personifies the independent spirit of being creative in an effort to expand musical horizons.
