First step is to get past denial...Ok lets face it, the original music scene in Phoenix is just about extinct. The reason is not lack of good bands. I can go out any night of the week and see great bands playing to a hand full of people in dive bars across the valley. "Sooo what's the problem then?" Glad you asked- here's my list:
1) There is no go to venue that draws people on it’s own- the only people who show up to
our concerts are OUR friends and fans. Take the Whiskey in LA- random people (who
have no idea what band is playing that night) show up because the venue has history
and they know good bands play there.
2) There is not a huge market for live ORIGINAL music around here. Unfortunately cover
bands draw and get paid.
3) Promotors don’t bring any new people to shows- they tell you when you play, who you
play with, what time you go on, how long you play for, take a big cut of your money and
are totally disorganized.
4) It’s hard to get media coverage- newspaper, radio, etc there so much going on in
Phoenix it’s hard to get noticed.
5) It’s hard to get people to come out to shows: gas prices, competition with ASU/
Cardinals/ Suns/ D-Backs/ Dance Clubs/ Movies....etc
6) People don’t like to give out email addresses- I had a party where my band played, we
had a keg- admission and beer was free if you give us your email address and people
still didn’t want to give it out!@$%
7) Gas prices also make touring an impossibility
8) Fans rarely stay the whole night- when the first band is done most of their fans leave,
then band 2 friends show up then leave when they are done...and so on
9) Bands that draw well get good shows- popularity doesn’t mean the bands are good (you
would think if a band is great they will have a good following but that is not necessarily
the case here)
So what then?
I have three show dates I’m booking for at the Last Exit in Tempe. I am creating an event that showcases awesome local talent. There is going to be 2 stages: 5 bands and 4 comedians, a live artist painting and selling art- seamless entertainment throughout the whole night. I am putting my neck out on the line because I want to create a product (the event) where fans have a great time, bar owners are happy because people showed up and drank, and most importantly...the bands played to the biggest possible audience- increasing their exposure. I have 3 pages worth of ideas and solutions to the problems listed above. I’m looking for bands that are ready to jump on this opportunity and willing to get involved with some creative, aggressive, guerrilla marketing! If you are interested send me an email with your band info...I am booking a November, December, and January show.
